Position Summary

The Salvation Army - Northern Division is hiring a Kitchen Assistant. The Kitchen Assistant will prepare and cook meals for clients and maintain a clean kitchen and dining room. In this position the candidate will also clean and sanitize all food service equipment, dishes, pots and pans. While performing the duties of this position, the candidate is required to stand, use hands and fingers, handle or feel, as well as listen and talk.

This is a regular full-time position with a work week expectation of 32 hours, Sunday (3:00pm-7pm) and Monday - Thursday (7:30am-3pm). The wage for this position is $17.00 per hour.

Qualifications

Experience working in food service; food preparation, kitchen equipment and proper sanitation practices. Ability to communicate well and work well independently and/or in a team setting. Possess a positive attitude, works well with others, be trustworthy, especially in confidential matters and be well organized and efficient. Ability to lift heavy items, frequently reaches, climb, stoop, kneel or crouch.

Must be willing to support the Mission of The Salvation Army; be able to pass The Salvation Army pre-employment background checks. It must be understood by the incumbent that the position is subject to the requirements of Safe From Harm upon commencement of employment and that the required Safe From Harm training program must be satisfactorily completed, within the first thirty (30) days of employment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a positive manner; courteous treatment of staff, clients and visitors; respect of others' property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors and subordinates. Support the Mission of The Salvation Army by treating every donor, contact and colleague with respect and dignity, and without discrimination of any kind.

2. Prepare/assist with daily meals in accordance with the menu plan.

3. Support volunteers during meal service and dining room operations.

4. May assist with serving meals, if short of volunteers.

5. Performs inventory control and maintains food pantry with direction from Food Service Coordinator.

6. Performs daily cleaning duties as determined by FSC.

7. Carries out routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment.

8. Manages kitchen/dining processes, and guides volunteers in the absence of the FSC.

9. Understands and supports the ServSafe guidelines of proper preparation and storage of food products, and food handling equipment.

10. Performs dishwashing duties for each meal, maintaining clean/sanitized food handling items/utensils.

11. Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of dishwasher, ovens, and other equipment.

12. Sweeps/mops kitchen, hallways, dry goods room, cooler & freezer, with the aid of the FSC.

13. Cleans dining room (wiping tables/chairs, sweeping & mopping) when no volunteers are available.

14. Removes garbage from containers and transports to the dumpster.

15. Maintains scrap cardboard for recycling (breaks down cardboard boxes).

16. Assists with unloading delivery trucks and moving supplies for proper placement.

17. Plans and executes Sunday evening meal with support from area church volunteers.

18. Assists with other programs at the discretion of the Corps Officers.

19. Other duties germane to the position as deemed by the Food Service Coordinator.
