Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-Greater New York) is an anti-poverty organization working to end homelessness in the New York area by 2050. We operate over 60 programs across New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County including emergency, transitional and permanent housing. Our services extend to families experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV/AIDS, veterans, youth aging out of foster care, adults with behavioral health or substance use needs, and others in need, including a special education preschool program.

We are in search of new talent in the following position...

Position: Senior Accountant (Hybrid Remote)

The Senior Accountant is a key member of the finance team supporting the Director of Finance in a wide array of fiscal functions, including general ledger transaction processing, financial reporting and analysis, budget development and monitoring, cost allocations, audit and monitoring support, and the implementation of financial and compliance controls. Provides support on fiscal matters to the division's programs in accordance with Volunteers of America - Greater New York, Inc. policy and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting and two to three years of financial accounting or auditing experience, preferably in the not-for-profit sector.



Additionally, the position requires:



  • Knowledge of financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and FASB standards is required.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to organize work and perform duties with a high level of accuracy is required.
  • collaborative work style and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office suite with strong Excel skills is required.



Senior Accountant Principal Responsibilities:



  1. Prepare standard related administration, as applicable. journal entries for daily business transactions and month-end closing; Adhere to the monthly general ledger close calendar to allow for appropriate review by the Director of Finance. Prepare monthly, quarterly and yearly financial reporting and analysis and ad hoc reports.
  2. Analyze and reconcile various general ledger and sub-ledger transactions and account balances monthly to ensure accurate financial reporting.
  3. Assist in preparing contract expenditure reporting. Obtain familiarity of funder requirements and submission deadlines. Contribute to automating and streamlining processes to enhance operational efficiencies.
  4. Participate in all aspects of the division's budgets processes, including the annual operating budget, contract budgets, modifications, renewals, and RFPs. Develop an understanding of the division's revenues and expenses.
  5. Prepare monthly and quarterly variance analyses of budget to actual results with comprehensive explanations and support. Monitor and report on flexible budget limitations.
  6. Participate in the fiscal year-end and internal audit processes and funder monitoring engagements. Identify and facilitate opportunities for improvement of financial processes.
  7. Maintain knowledge and understanding of Volunteers of America-Greater New York policies and procedures and funders' contract reimbursement manuals and guidance to promote compliance with policies, procedures and regulations.
  8. Provide support on financial initiatives and projects, and perform other related duties as required.
