Position Summary:
The Cardiology Fellowship Program Director at the University of Minnesota will lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Cardiology Fellowship Program. As one of the country's oldest and most prestigious programs, the University of Minnesota's fellowship program has a storied legacy of producing prominent academic cardiologists and strong clinicians and leaders in cardiology. The director will be responsible for ensuring that the program continues to meet all accreditation requirements, provides high-quality education, and prepares fellows to become exceptional leaders in the field of cardiology. This role requires collaboration with faculty, fellows, and institutional leadership to create a supportive and dynamic learning environment that upholds the University of Minnesota's tradition of excellence.

The Program Director's vision is expected to align closely with the division's mission and vision to be recognized as one of the best cardiology programs in the country. This includes a commitment to producing the next generation of cardiology leaders through innovative education, participation in cutting-edge research, rigorous clinical training, and a culture of excellence.

Key Responsibilities:
Program Leadership:
Oversee all aspects of the Cardiology Fellowship Program, including curriculum design, rotation schedules, and evaluation processes.
Ensure the program meets or exceeds ACGME accreditation standards and other relevant regulatory requirements.
Lead recruitment efforts, including the selection of fellows and faculty involvement in the educational process.
Foster a culture of academic excellence, professionalism, and continuous learning among fellows and faculty.
Monitor and evaluate fellow performance, providing feedback and mentorship to support their professional development.
Curriculum Development:
Design and implement a comprehensive curriculum integrating clinical training, didactic education, and research opportunities.
Regularly review and update the curriculum to reflect the latest cardiology and medical education advancements.
Incorporate innovative teaching methods and technologies to enhance the educational experience.

Faculty Collaboration and Development:
Collaborate with faculty members to ensure high-quality teaching and supervision.
Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for faculty involved in the fellowship program.
Organize and lead faculty meetings to discuss program goals, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
Fellowship Administration:
Manage the day-to-day operations of the fellowship program, including scheduling, documentation, and communication with fellows.
Prepare and maintain all necessary documentation for accreditation, program evaluations, and institutional reporting.
Oversee the fellowship budget and ensure the effective allocation of resources to support the program's goals.
Continuous Improvement:
Regularly evaluate the program's effectiveness, incorporating feedback from fellows, faculty, and external reviewers.
Implement changes to improve the quality of education and training the fellowship program provides.
Stay informed about national trends in cardiology education and incorporate best practices into the program.
Quality Improvement (QI) Initiatives:
Lead and support integrating quality improvement (QI) programs within the fellowship curriculum.
Encourage and facilitate fellows' active participation in QI projects, ensuring they contribute to ongoing efforts to enhance patient care and clinical outcomes.
Collaborate with clinical faculty to identify opportunities for fellows to engage in QI activities and projects.
Monitor and assess the impact of QI projects, using data to drive improvements and inform future initiatives.
Research and Scholarly Activity:
Promote and support fellows' involvement in research and scholarly activities, ensuring they have opportunities to present and publish their work.
Encourage and facilitate fellows' participation in national conferences, ensuring they present their research on these platforms.
Ensure that each fellow authors at least one peer-reviewed publication during their training.
Collaborate with research faculty to integrate research opportunities into the fellowship curriculum.
Encourage faculty to engage in research and scholarly activities related to cardiology fellows training.

Board Preparation:
Ensure that all fellows are well-prepared for their board exams, with the goal of achieving a 100% board pass rate.
Implement targeted board review sessions and provide access to study resources that align with the exam content.
Monitor fellow progress and provide additional support as needed to ensure successful exam outcomes.
Fellow Welfare, Wellness, and Support:
Serve as a primary advocate for fellows, addressing their academic, professional, and personal needs.
Create a supportive and inclusive environment that promotes well-being and work-life balance.
Implement and monitor initiatives that support fellow wellness, including mental health resources, stress management programs, and strategies to achieve a healthy work-life balance.
Facilitate regular meetings with fellows to discuss their progress, challenges, and career aspirations.
Develop and maintain programs that address burnout prevention and promote resilience among fellows.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI):
The Program Director is expected to actively promote and integrate principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into the fellowship program. This includes creating a welcoming environment for fellows and faculty of all backgrounds, addressing any disparities in education or opportunities, and ensuring that the program reflects the diverse patient populations served by the University of Minnesota. The director will be responsible for implementing strategies that foster an inclusive culture where all fellows feel supported and valued and for leading efforts to recruit a diverse group of fellows and faculty.

Qualifications

Qualifications:
Education:
MD or DO degree with board certification in Cardiovascular Disease.
Fellowship training in cardiology / advanced training in subspecialties
Experience:
Minimum of 3 years of experience in academic cardiology, including teaching and mentoring cardiology fellows.
Demonstrated leadership experience, preferably in a medical education or fellowship program.
A strong track record of clinical excellence, research, and scholarly activity in cardiology.
Skills:
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
Strong organizational and administrative skills, with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Commitment to fostering a positive learning environment and promoting the well-being of fellows.
Licensure:
Should be eligible for an active medical license in the state of Minnesota.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in program accreditation and familiarity with ACGME requirements.
A proven track record of innovation in medical education, including the use of simulation, technology, and other educational tools.
Experience in curriculum development and program evaluation.
An active research portfolio in cardiology or medical education.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: Depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
