This is an in-person position.

The Labovitz School of Business and Economics (LSBE) at the University of Minnesota Duluth invites applications for an Academic Advisor position.
Academic advisors participate in two major areas of responsibility: advising and program operation. The academic advisor is expected to perform the full range of advising activities. Academic advisors are expected to have thorough familiarity with the subject matter within the degree program in order to advise students as to curricular planning and academic progress.

This is a 12-month, on-campus position. This position requires some work during evening and weekend hours.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.

Interacting with students and supporting student record processes (90%)

  • Improve students' academic planning skills.
  • Apply extensive knowledge of curricular options, requirements, and engagement opportunities to identify, compare, and contrast viable degree programs that match a student's interests and goals.
  • Evaluate students' curricular plans, counsel students regarding communication interpersonal skills related to academic success, and other academic activities.
  • Coach students through the major and career decision-making process by developing an individualized, action-oriented plan to assist students with overcoming barriers as they move toward degree progress and timely graduation.
  • Act as an intermediary between students and university faculty and community experts.
  • Monitor student progression order to intervene, advise, and recommend solutions to academic difficulties.
  • Assess and evaluate each student's diverse needs and backgrounds by utilizing adaptive advising strategies within the cultural contexts, and connect them to campus resources.
  • Assist with the various student record processes.
  • Create a network of relationships with students, faculty, and campus staff to deliver effective advising and support services to students, and serve as a liaison to other units.
  • Contribute towards program development, provide input on the development of advising systems and processes.

Additional job activities (10%)

  • Serve on department, school, and/or university committees as needed or requested.
  • Collaborate with other campus offices and resources as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Advising and Academic Services.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited university and two year of related experience -OR- master's degree

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Student Affairs, or related field
  • Two years of experience working in higher education
  • Working knowledge of student development theory
  • Excellent oral and presentation skills
  • Capacity for learning new systems
  • Experience working with student records and student database systems
  • Experience working with details and relating them to larger, complex processes
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Experience interacting with diverse audiences
  • Proficient with MS Office
  • Ability to work a schedule that includes some extended business hours, including some evenings and weekends.
About the Department

Approximately 2,100 undergraduate and graduate students are currently enrolled in the school's programs. Both the undergraduate and graduate programs are AACSB-International accredited. LSBE has approximately 50 full-time faculty members in four academic departments: Accounting and Finance, Economics and Health Care Management, Management Studies, and Marketing. The School offers Bachelor of Accounting, Bachelor of Business Administration and MBA degrees. Regional outreach is accomplished primarily through activities of the Bureau of Business and Economics Research. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: The salary range for this position is $42,500 - $52,500 depending on qualification and experience.

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment

Position Type: Faculty and P&A Staff
