The University of Minnesota Medical School, Department of Family Medicine is hiring a diabetes educator to help teach medical students with a team and case-based approach.

Considered a casual position, this person will:

• Provide comprehensive Diabetes Self-Care Management Education (DSME), following American Diabetes Association and Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists guidelines, to medical students as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team
• Teach medical students in tandem with a Family Medicine physician using a case-based curriculum using visual and hands-on education on continuous glucose monitors, insulin pumps, blood glucose monitors, and medications
• Alternate monthly 2-hour teaching sessions with other diabetes educator(s)
• Be responsible for maintaining expertise in education and diabetes self-management trends, technological devices and medications
• Partner with other diabetes educator(s), the Family Medicine Clerkship course director, clerkship coordinator(s), and Diabetes faculty
• Attend required staff trainings and meetings (annual planning meeting)
• Perform other duties as assigned

All required qualifications must be on application materials in order to be considered for this role.

Required qualifications:

• Experience with basic diabetes education for individuals and/or in group sessions
• Knowledge of advanced diabetes care and education including but not limited to pumps and newer technologies
• Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist
• Registered Nurse or Registered Dietician
• Ability to bear up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects
• Minimum education of a degree in nursing, dietetics nutrition, or a related field
• Minimum experience of two years of related experience

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota was created more than 50 years ago in response to a legislative mandate to train primary care physicians.
