Position Summary

The Manager of Commercial Pricing and Analytics will lead a team responsible for pricing strategy, wholesale power forecasting, and market operations support. This role will involve overseeing pricing managers and analysts in analyzing market trends, transactions, and power purchase agreements (PPAs) to inform business strategy. The manager will also act as the subject matter expert (SME) on market protocols, serving as the QSE (Qualified Scheduling Entity) representative and liaising with ERCOT (market operator). The QSE Operations Support ensures that the Day Ahead and Real Time market operators have the data, analysis, reports and regulatory support to successfully manage CPS Energy's retail and wholesale load obligation and energy supply resources in the ERCOT energy market.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Power Price Forecasting:



  • Lead and manage the team responsible for forecasting wholesale power prices.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of pricing strategies and modifies pricing structures as needed.



Wholesale Power Strategy:



  • Collaborate with the Wholesale Power Strategy team to provide pricing and market analytics that drive strategic initiatives.
  • Analyze short- and long-term transactions, including Power Purchase Agreements evaluations.
  • Provide strategic insights to inform decision-making across various time horizons.



QSE & ERCOT Operations:



  • Official representative of the QSE (Qualified Scheduling Entity) to ERCOT.
  • Serve as the SME on ERCOT protocols and QSE operations, ensuring compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Participates in the ERCOT stakeholder process. May hold voting positions on one or more ERCOT Stakeholder Committees representing the interests of CPS Energy.



DA/RT Market Operations:



  • Provide support for Day-Ahead and Real-Time market operations to ensure data and data analysis are sufficient to effectively guide front office strategies and decisions.
  • Advises on transmission impacts to power generation dispatch.
  • Applies expertise and understanding of power plant operational parameters to development of offer curves and forecast models.
  • Recommends business plan metrics, strategies and initiatives for Energy Supply and Market Operations business area (ESMO) and monitors and reports on progress of such.
  • Recommends strategies that improve the operation in the ERCOT Market while minimizing risk to the costs incurred by the CPS Energy retail customers.
  • Reviews financial results of Day Ahead and Real Time Operations to recommend modifications in front office strategies where appropriate.
  • Identifies key performance indicators for day ahead, real time.
  • Liaison between Front Office and Settlements (Back Office) to ensure financial results meet expectations, identify improvements needs and implement strategy adjustments.
  • Identifies and implements systems and processes that improve the accuracy and timeliness of information that impacts generation dispatch including offer curves, outage scheduling and unit characteristics.
  • Collaborates with Day Ahead/Real Time and the Enterprise Risk Management function to develop and implement appropriate controls regarding front office strategies.
  • Collaborates with Enterprise Risk to ensure procedures governing power transactions provide proper balance of internal controls and needed flexibility to respond to changing market conditions.
  • Develop and maintain reserve margin forecasts that include recommendation regarding capacity available for wholesale transactions.



ESMO & Analytics:



  • Work with the broader Energy Supply and Market Operations team to ensure alignment on key market trends and operational goals.
  • Collaborate with Supply-Side and Demand-Side Analytics teams, offering analytical support across various initiatives.
  • Mentoring and Talent Development through effective sharing of ideas, knowledge, or experience by means of mentoring, training, and other collaboration.

Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Strong Analytical skills along with proficiency in Microsoft Office Package.
Familiar with the technical and economic aspects of electric power generation resources.
Familiar with ERCOT protocols, energy market rules and policies that impact electric utility business and planning.
Ability to effectively communicate.
Project Management skills.
Must have favorable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in business administration, Engineering, Economics, Math, Finance, or other quantitative field from an accredited university.
  • Rigorous and robust analytics skills
  • Comprehensive understanding of cost to generate electric power from various resources.
  • Broad, demonstrated experience in power markets.
  • Extensive experience in pricing strategy, wholesale power forecasting, and market operations support.
  • Experience in dispatching units based on offers into a dynamic market such as the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT)

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Economics, Math, Finance, or other quantitative field from an accredited university.
Required Certifications
Working Environment

Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events. Available to address challenges and issues that may occur after normal work hours, including weekends.
