This role is part of the New Shepard program. New Shepard is a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Karman line - the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space.

As part of a passionate and accomplished team, you will lead an integrated team comprised of members from the program management, engineering, integrated supply chain, operations, maintenance, and production organizations. As the New Shepard Lead Engineer (Cognizant Engineer) for the Crew Capsule Preliminary Deceleration System (PDS), you will assume ultimate ownership and accountability for the success of CC PDS throughout the product lifecycle.

You will lead design and ensure the successful production of the PDS sub-system for the next generation New Shepard launch vehicles. This includes direct line management and coaching of a team of dedicated engineers and analysts. This also includes indirect leadership of supply chain and manufacturing engineers. This will require leadership, creative problem solving, and ingenious design work. You will also be the technical authority for PDS decisions affecting our ongoing launch and refurbishment operations at Launch Site One.

As New Shepard Lead Engineer for PDS, you must have an excellent understanding of design including parachutes, ordnance, and safety critical systems. You must also have exceptional leadership and project management skills. We are seeking a self-motivated and highly organized individual who can work with minimal direction and coordinate teams in the successful execution of engineering integration activities.

This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the PDS integrated team in successfully executing a design iteration for the next generation New Shepard Launch vehicles
  • Lead team meetings to set priorities and direction for the team, as well as to stay accountable for the team's work and decisions
  • Coordinate configuration changes with upstream and downstream stakeholders
  • Assess programmatic impact of configuration change requests
  • Create and manage line of balance for hardware and key equipment to support upcoming builds
  • Partner with manufacturing engineering and contribute to development of detailed procedures
  • Respond to unexpected changes to ensure integration activities stay on schedule, on budget, and are completed with high-quality and documented build pedigree
  • Coordinate with procurement, internal and external manufacturing to ensure that hardware priorities are well understood and are actively managed to support the need dates
  • Work closely with key suppliers in coming up with creative solutions to manufacture complex designs
  • Identify schedule-critical hardware, equipment, people, and facilities; resolve constraints
  • Develop recovery strategies when non-conformances or other escapes are identified
  • Develop and execute verification plans for the subsystem
  • Identify risks and develop mitigation plans
  • Develop schedule and budget; manage and report progress
  • Develop and report key project metrics

Qualifications:

  • Passion for Blue Origin's mission: Millions of people living and working in space!
  • B.S./B.A. degree in engineering
  • 10+ years of experience in design, development, integration, or testing - preferably with parachute systems.
  • Experience in designing and verifying hardware
  • Experience in the design and manufacture of complex mechanical systems
  • Possess high attention to detail and strong organizational/coordination skills
  • Demonstrated ability building trusting and effective working relationships that improve team performance and deliver results
  • Experience managing large assemblies and Bills of Material
  • Working knowledge of configuration management principles and practices
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Desired:

  • Demonstrated technical expertise with aerospace structures design
  • Experience integrating complex subsystems into a spacecraft
  • Experience leading a technical team of diverse skillsets and experience
  • Experience in CREO design tool
  • Experience with P6 or other GANTT-style project management tools and budgeting
  • Experience in Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA)

Compensation Range for:

WA applicants is $136,620.00-$191,268.00

Other site ranges may differ

Paid Time Off: Up to four (4) weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours, and up to 14 company-paid holidays.

Discretionary bonus: Bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results.
