Overview

Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences Eastern Virginia Medical School at Old Dominion University is seeking a Chair for the Department of Otolaryngology who will be responsible for managing and aligning the department's academic, research, and clinical activities with the ODU mission.

The Department Chair of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery will provide strategic leadership and oversight for all clinical, academic, and research activities within the department. This position reports directly to the Dean of the School of Medicine and works collaboratively with hospital leadership to advance the department's mission of excellence in patient care, medical education, and innovative research.



Responsibilities

The Chairman will be responsible for:

    Provide strategic vision and operational leadership for the department's clinical, educational, and research programs.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain faculty members while fostering a culture of academic excellence and innovation.
  • Oversee the department's graduate medical education program, including the otolaryngology residency program.
  • Manage departmental resources, including budget oversight and financial planning.
  • Maintain and enhance clinical partnerships within the health system and community.
  • Advance the department's research portfolio and scholarly activities.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in institutional leadership committees and strategic planning initiatives.
  • Maintain an active clinical practice.
  • Ensure highest standards of patient care and safety.
  • Oversee quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support the development of innovative clinical programs.
  • Foster multidisciplinary collaboration across departments.
  • Support faculty development and mentorship programs.
  • Foster academic collaborations within and outside the institution.

Qualifications

MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.

Board certification in Otolaryngology.

Current Virginia medical license or eligible for licensure in Virginia.

Minimum of 10 years of clinical experience in otolaryngology.

Proven track record of academic leadership and administrative experience.

Strong record of scholarly activity and peer-reviewed publications.

Experience in managing complex budgets and resources.

Excellence in teaching and mentoring.

Leadership Requirements:

Active participation in national professional organizations.

Experience with ACGME requirements and maintaining program accreditation.

Understanding of academic medical center operations.

Demonstrated success in faculty recruitment and retention.

Track record of fostering research programs and securing funding.

Experience with strategic planning and implementation.
