Position Description:

The Medical College of Wisconsin is an academic partner Children's Wisconsin, the region's only independent healthcare system dedicated solely to the health and well-being of children. This free-standing 306-bed children's hospital ranks as one of the top children's hospitals in the United States.

The Department of Pediatrics - Division of Hematology, Oncology, BMT is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to support the Pediatric Oncology services in a variety of clinical settings, working closely with an attending physician to care for pediatric oncology patients located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the MACC Fund Research Center.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team, providing direct patient care to children under the care of the inpatient and outpatient oncology service. Services will be performed in the Inpatient and/or Outpatient Oncology unit with the potential to also provide support in the Day Hospital and/or Procedures unit. The patient population includes oncology patients, ranging from infants to young adults.

The Ideal Candidate will be passionate about Pediatrics and Pediatric Oncologic care wanting to be part of a thriving and very collaborative academic practice at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). Areas of responsibility will include, but not be limited to providing direct patient care to patients of the Pediatric Hematologic and Oncologic services within a variety of clinical settings including inpatient and/or outpatient oncology unit with the potential to provide support in the day hospital and/or procedures unit.

In this role you will:

  1. Collaborate with MCW pediatric oncology physicians and interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of children under the care of the oncology service.
  2. Order, perform and interpret diagnostic tests, procedures, laboratory studies. Appropriately communicate findings with the medical team as well as patients and families.
  3. Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with the oncology physician, monitor effectiveness of plan of care throughout the patient's hospitalization; coordinate the care and discharge of patients.
  4. Document within the Electronic Medical Record accurate and timely admission, discharge, and progress notes, as well as writing orders and discharge instructions.
  5. Provide education and counseling to patients and families on disease and treatment plans.
  6. Instruction (formal and/or informal) of nurses and nursing students, medical students, residents, and other health care professionals.
  7. Attend required training, educational sessions, and program specific meetings.
  8. Participate in section quality improvement and/or research activities.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
  • Develop pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitor effectiveness of plan of care.
  • Educate patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Perform procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Document within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborate and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

Preferred Schedule:




Full-time role with expectations for coverage during core business hours and flexibility required as necessary to accommodate clinical needs.



Position Requirements:

Preferred Experience:

Previous APP, nursing, pediatric or oncology experience preferred.

Minimum Education:

Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing
Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies

Minimum Requirements:

Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner Wisconsin Physician Assistant License

Wisconsin RN License Certification by NCCPA

Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License AHA ACLS, AHA BLS, DEA
