Staff ML Engineer, Perception Foundation Model

The mission of the Waymo Applied Research team is to develop machine learning solutions addressing open problems in autonomous driving, towards the goal of the safely operating Waymo vehicles in dozens of cities and under all driving conditions. As part of our work, we also initiate and foster collaborations with other research teams in Alphabet.

In this hybrid role, you will report to a Research Director

You will:

• Design controlled experiments to verify hypotheses and draw trustworthy conclusions
• Build necessary training and data infrastructure through collaboration with cross-functional teams
• Articulate the motivations and findings with team members through writing up and presentations

You have:

• 10+ years of experience designing and optimizing neural networks using Transformers and ConvNets
• Strong track record in developing deep learning algorithms such as architecture and optimization
• Extensive knowledge of deep learning optimization, loss function, and scalable neural network architectures
• Strong problem-solving skills to tackle open challenges
• Self-motivated to design experiments and to draw conclusions from results

We prefer:

• PhD or strong track record of execution in computer science, statistics, mathematics, physics, or another
• Related experience in model scaling and/or data scaling & curation
• Related expertise in self-supervised learning and generative modeling for perception
• Related experience in VLM and LLM
