Department:CSES | Crop, Soil and Environmental SciencesDepartment's Website: Research Responsibilities: This position offers the opportunity to provide leadership on research and education activities in the broad field of soil microbiology, microbial ecology, and soil health in Arkansas. An integrative and applied approach to research is expected, working with multidisciplinary teams of research scientists, extension specialists, and stakeholders. Leadership is needed in the development, evaluation, interpretation, and application of new approaches for assessment of microbial biodiversity-functional relationships and their impacts on soil and plant productivity as well as linkages to surface water quality. The investigation of sustainable agricultural practices on the soil microbiome across the diverse landscapes, production systems, and agroecosystems in Arkansas is needed to complement current and ongoing research in the areas of soil health related to fertility, chemistry, soil physical properties and processes, and water quality. Research may address problems related to the soil microbiome, soil health, and/or water quality, the impact of climate change and extreme weather events on soil microbial communities, the role of microbes in remediation of contaminated ecosystems, or soil food web dynamics. Demonstrated experience with state-of-the art molecular approaches, such as amplicon, meta-transcriptomic, and genomic sequence analysis, as well as traditional microbial assessment techniques, is advantageous. Bioinformatic analyses, use of AI and machine learning, and overall ability to analyze and visualize large datasets for multi-dimensional analysis of communities as related to functioning is desired. The ability to conduct applied research and translate findings to develop best management practices related to the biological aspects of soil health, soil-crop productivity, and water quality is essential. The incumbent will be expected to develop a strong, externally funded, and nationally recognized research program, publish in refereed journals, and train undergraduate and graduate students. The incumbent will be expected to work closely with Extension Specialists to translate research findings into better recommendations to protect valuable soil and water resources and maintain agricultural productivity, with a focus on improved soil health management. Teaching Responsibilities: The incumbent will have responsibility for teaching an undergraduate/graduate course in Soil Microbiology with a laboratory component and teaching one additional undergraduate-/graduate-level course in the Environmental, Soil, and Water Science core, such as Ecosystems Assessment, Environmental Contaminants, or others as needed. The incumbent will also be expected to contribute to undergraduate advising in the Environmental, Soil, and Water Science major. Qualifications: A Ph. D. in a field related to soil microbiology with training quantifying microbial abundances, activities, and microbial community assessment. Demonstrated experience in i) conducting research that integrates basic and applied principles to assess the impacts of microbiome diversity on soil and plant productivity to solve environmental, water, and soil management issues as they interact with vegetative cover, agriculture, and climate across landscapes and regions, ii) acquiring competitive grant funding, iii) publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals, and iv) developing and presenting outreach and classroom educational programs is expected. Candidates should possess excellent written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with other researchers and clientele groups.
