Description

Special education teachers in this therapeutic day school (grades 9-12) provide differentiated instruction in selected academic subjects to meet the needs of students with a wide range of learning styles and abilities. Classes are typically 3 to 5 students. Teachers work closely with school clinicians and student support staff to ensure a safe and supportive school community. Teachers participate in the development of IEPs and provide instruction and accommodations to students as outlined in their plans.
Primary Responsibilities include:



  • Effectively plans instruction and assessment.
  • Effective management of classroom environment
  • Promotion of high standards and expectations for students' achievement
  • Promotion of equity and appreciation of diversity


Additional responsibilities include:

* Maintenance of materials, records, and classroom space

* Special Education collaboration with IEP teams and school clinical staff

* Supervision of Students

* Provide individualized academic supports in small class groupings

* Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Current Massachusetts license for teacher of students with moderate disabilities grades 5-12, or teacher of students with severe disabilities

Master's degree in special education preferred

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 This title declares it to be the policy of the United States that discrimination on the ground of race, color, or national origin shall not occur in connection with programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance and authorizes and directs the appropriate federal departments and agencies to take action to carry out this policy.

The Equal Educational Opportunities Act prohibits specific discriminatory conduct, including segregating students on the basis of race, color or national origin, and discrimination

against faculty and staff Furthermore, the EEOA requires school districts to take action to overcome students' language barriers that impede equal participation in educational programs.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities by recipients of federal funds. Title IX has been applied to ensure equal opportunities for female students in athletics and in cases of sexual harassment by school administrators, teachers and students.
