SHP) is seeking a Work Assistant (Medical Interpreter) Per Diem to work in the The Health Outreach Practice Experience (
HOPE) clinic on Wednesdays in Plainfield, NJ.
The Health Outreach Practice Experience (
HOPE) clinic is a community service-learning program of the Rutgers School of Health Professions Physician Assistant (PA) Program. Through
HOPE, faculty and students provide free health services to underserved and uninsured populations.
The Work Assistant (Medical Interpreter)
will provide Spanish-English interpretation and translation for patient care. Individual will be expected to interpret/translate verbal and/or written communication in-person, by phone, and via other virtual devices. Individual will work with practitioners who are not able to speak Spanish and are providing services to patients who are not able to speak English. Interpretation and translation must comply with medical office policies and procedures including but not limited to professional behavior and patient confidentiality.
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Demonstrate verbal and written fluency in Spanish and English.
- Translate verbal and written medical information precisely and accurately from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.
- Answer the phone or screen messages and interpret content to appropriate team member.
- Interpret and translate for patient care including intake of demographics and medical/social information; gathering of patient history and physical exam; explanation of assessment and treatment plan.
- Interact with other providers or staff, external to the office, over the phone or virtual device.

Minimum Education and Experience |
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Fluency in Spanish and English required.

- An understanding of diverse cultural/socioeconomic backgrounds, along with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well under pressure.
