About the Job

The candidate will be considered an essential employee. Essential Employees are defined as employees who are expected to report to campus during a University State of Emergency (reduced operations or campus closure) unless specifically directed by the Department not to report of if directed by civil emergency or medical authorities not to report for health and safety reasons. Essential Employees must report to campus even if the closure is less than three days.

Position Summary
A senior research scientist is sought to conduct research for pediatric high-grade gliomas and for neurofibromatosis type 1-related malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST). Our research seeks to develop an immunotherapeutic strategy against diffuse hemispheric glioma, G34 mutant and MPNST and involves in vitro and in vivo genetics (cell lines and mouse models), epigenetics (whole exome sequencing, RNA sequencing, chromatin based sequencing), and flow cytometry. Strategies being developed include targeted pharmaceuticals and oncolytic viruses.

Responsibilities:

SCIENTIFIC OVERSIGHT/DIRECTION (60%)

Employee shall regularly meet with PI (minimum once per week) to review plan for upcoming experiments and to discuss interim analyses. All experiments will require replicates and adequate positive and negative controls.

Employee shall independently plan and/or conduct experiments, conduct literature reviews and searches, be responsible for collection, analysis, and review of data. Employee shall maintain detailed and organized notes on an electronic notebook for reproducibility. Employee shall maintain detailed and organized notes as required by regulatory agencies. Employee shall draft methodologies for manuscripts and generate figures for acquired data.

Employee shall supervise, teach and oversee lab personnel on scientific experiments, protocols, SOP's and procedures being conducted in the lab.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES (37.5%)

Employee shall assist PI by submitting and drafting forms, protocol revisions, providing information for renewal applications, Writing SOP (standard operating procedures) conducting laboratory inspection services for IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee), IBC (Institutional Biosafety Committee) and the IRB (Institutional Review Board).

Employee will be responsible for record keeping, ordering and obtaining, updating inventories, securely storing reagents and materials as appropriate, and be available for lab inspections services for any controlled substances.

Employee shall provide and keep detailed records for all required University and lab-specific training.

EQUIPMENT (2.5%)

Employee will be responsible for all testing, repair, and calibration of laboratory equipment. Employee shall research and conduct analysis for all new equipment needing to be purchase. Employee will work with vendors and companies to obtain quote pricing and demo units as needed to meet needs of research being done.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
PhD degree or equivalent
Greater than 5 years of experience in pediatric neuro-oncology research
Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Ability to organize notes for lab operations and regulatory requirements, draft research methodologies, and analyze acquired data with figure generation.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $70,000-$72,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
