Position Purpose: |
The Library Technician supports the delivery of essential library services to students, faculty, and staff by attending to circulation and access services, maintaining library records, and ensuring the smooth operation of daily tasks. This position is vital in fostering access to library resources, promoting user engagement, and upholding institutional goals through collaborative efforts, customer service, and adherence to library policies and procedures. The Library Technician performs routine tasks with defined responsibilities in support of library services, focusing on circulation and access services. They have limited independent decision-making and work under close supervision. They work collaboratively with the Library's Access Services Coordinator to accomplish the Library's and the College's goals. |
Essential Functions: |
- Perform routine check-out/check-in operations for various types of materials (books, audiovisual items, equipment, etc.)
- Manage library account creation and maintenance for students, faculty, and staff.
- Process and track overdue items, including sending notices and calculating fines.
- Handle basic troubleshooting of circulation-related technology (e.g., self-checkout machines, security gates).
- Assist patrons with accessing electronic resources and navigating the library catalog.
- Explain library policies and procedures to patrons, including loan periods, renewals, and fines.
- Process and maintain course reserves materials, including working with faculty to ensure timely availability.
- Use databases to obtain or verify basic information about library materials.
- Barcode, label, and security-tape materials as part of basic processing.
- Perform simple material repairs and prepare items for shelving.
- Perform routine photocopying or scanning of materials.
- Receive, sort, and deliver incoming mail and shipments; package items for shipping.
- Assist with basic interlibrary loan transactions.
- Shelve books and participate in stack maintenance, including shelf-reading.
- Assist with basic processing of new materials (e.g., applying labels, security tags).
- Perform basic processing related to fines and fees.
- Contribute to the implementation of Access Services initiatives as directed by the Access Services Coordinator.
- Assist with library opening and closing procedures.
- Monitor and maintain public spaces, including study areas and group study rooms.
- Collect and record basic usage statistics for circulation services.
- Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
- Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Statement: |
Reports to the Library's Division Dean and works closely with the Access Services Coordinator. Work is reviewed frequently, and decisions are made within established guidelines. |
Physical Demands/Working Environment: |
While performing the essential functions of these positions, employees in this classification must frequently sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and handle, control and manipulate objects. Manual dexterity and coordination are required for over half of the daily work period, which is spent sitting while operating usual office equipment and driving. Work involves occasional periods of concentrated mental and visual attention.
Positions in this classification require mobility, including the ability to lift and/or move materials under 5 lbs. daily, 5-25 lbs. frequently, and over 25 lbs. occasionally. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities. Work safely. |
Knowledge Skills and Abilities: |
- Knowledge of academic library policies and procedures.
- Basic knowledge of academic library procedures, organization, and classification systems.
- Skill in searching and retrieving information using integrated library system databases and web-based applications.
