THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation is on the lookout for a Transportation Automotive Equipment Specialist to support the District Equipment Manager and County Equipment Managers in overseeing the fleet management program for District 4-0. This role entails taking charge of the repair, maintenance, and dispatching operations for the automotive fleet associated with the District Office. Do not miss your chance to apply today!

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will be responsible for inspecting all equipment within the 4-0 District to assess their condition and identify necessary repairs. You will oversee the management of the automotive fleet for the District Office, which includes assigning vehicles and scheduling their maintenance and repairs. Additionally, you will maintain and dispatch fleets of automotive and highway maintenance equipment, ensuring that winter equipment undergoes inspection before the dry run, with a written report submitted to the Department of Environmental Management by November 1 each year. You will also assist in providing essential training related to winter preparedness.

You will prepare both oral and written reports and recommendations based on all inspections conducted. Furthermore, you will manage training for core and non-core equipment, as well as for Transportation Equipment Operator Specialists across all six counties in the District, ensuring that training sessions are scheduled and completed in accordance with Department specifications. You will certify Equipment Operators on their operational skills for both core and non-core equipment and recommend additional training when necessary. Coordination of schedules for equipment operator training within the District will be part of your responsibilities, including inputting confirmation of curriculum and schedules into the SAP/LSO computer system.

Moreover, you will coordinate vendor training for critical equipment that is either new or poses safety concerns, such as liquid asphalt, snow removal, and litter equipment. You will prepare annual training schedules to allow the District sufficient time to arrange for personnel training on core equipment. Evaluating operator training curriculums and recommending changes at three District sites will also be part of your duties. You will manage and supervise the District Transportation Equipment Operator B, who is tasked with operating the pony truck, and will be responsible for overseeing payroll and leave slips for this position, ensuring adherence to attendance, call-off, and leave procedures, as well as compliance with starting and stopping times and break periods. Finally, you will ensure the effective utilization of staff and facilities to achieve the most cost-effective and efficient operations, thereby minimizing nonproductive training time.
