Position Summary

The Engineer position holds the responsibility for the safe, reliable, and economic round-the-clock operation of the Bulk Electric Systems (BES). Duties include Engineering responsibilities for the design, construction, maintenance, and operation activities of our substations. These Engineering duties may include continuous support and balancing of energy flow and response to system disturbances, along with all generation, distribution, and transmission activities that provide electric services to customers.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Attends seminars, continuing education opportunities for professional development
  • Evaluates and recommends new standards, products, and/or services
  • Recommends and implements improvements to processes and procedures
  • May include limited supervisory responsibilities, including lower level engineers
  • Makes frequent independent decisions and recommendations that affect the section, department, and/or division
  • Participates in and provides input to area budget
  • Actively works within financial objectives set by management
  • Discipline expert to mentor and develop employees
  • Signs and seals required own engineering work and engineering work by staff under his/her oversight
  • Maintain, revise, and produce material specifications equipment including power transformers, high- voltage circuit breakers, metal- clad switchgears, etc.
  • Develop and evaluate Requests for Proposals, Scope of work docs, and Evaluation matrixes to procure substation equipment, professional svcs, and general svcs.
  • Perform electrical and physical substation design, includes grounding grid design utilizing CDEGS and IEEE 80, rigid bus design using IEEE 605, direct stroke lightning shielding via IEEE 998 Rolling Sphere Method, battery sizing calculations using IEEE 485, and development of AC schematics, wiring diagrams, and interconnect diagrams for relay protection panels.
  • Issue purchase orders and review approval drawings for substation equipment.
  • Coordinate and submit transmission and distribution outages to facilitate project completion.
  • Develop critical Task plans to outline steps necessary for project execution and restoration plans to mitigate N-1 contingencies during project construction.
  • Manage and provide technical support for electrical crews during construction.
  • Perform Root cause analysis investigations with multi-functional project teams to determine operational event causes.

Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Texas Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures.
Demonstrated mastery of engineering discipline skills.
Ability to lead cross-functional business initiatives and teams.
Demonstrated ability to effectively handle a broad range of engineering assignments with minimum supervision.
Ability to lead cross-functional teams on internal projects.
Demonstrated ability to manage project costs, timeline, scope, and risks.
Ability to effectively check work product for adequacy, quality and accuracy.
Effective communication skills focused on understanding customer needs and developing resolution.
Strong people skills, with bias for a collaborative working style.
Ability to work call duty and occasional unscheduled work in the evenings, weekends, or holidays after experience level permits.
Ability to travel occasionally, to off-site work, to seminars, manufacturing plant inspections, etc.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.

Bachelors of Science degree in an engineering field from an ABET accredited four-year college or university

Working Environment
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Employee may potentially be exposed to hazardous chemicals, wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather, noisy and dusty environment. Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events. After hours work may be required.
Physical Demands
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
