Typical office hours are Monday-Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm. Two or three short evening or weekends will be required each month for small, local cultural programming events associated with J program and returnee activities.

Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Study Abroad will, with the Director of Study abroad, provide vision to the unit's efforts to grow and expand participation in study abroad, contributing to strategic planning, policy and procedure development and helping to expand existing partnerships and relationships to create new study abroad opportunities and services that will help students clarifying their study abroad opportunities and navigate their study abroad experience successfully.
The Assistant Director will manage a portfolio of exchange partnerships and study abroad experiences (e.g., summer/semester/year long, and faculty-led programs), crafting and implementing marketing initiatives for these programs and coordinating the student application and selection processes. They will offer necessary support throughout the study abroad experience and assist the Director with responses to emergencies and crises. They will develop and oversee acculturation and cultural activities for study abroad returnees as well as incoming exchange students.
The Assistant Director will provide limited and occasional immigration services as a DSO and an ARO.
FLSA Exempt
Required Education/Experience/Skills
Bachelor's degree in a related field; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

3+ years of full-time experience in an international education office at a tertiary institution
Preferred Education/Experience/Skills

  • Master's Degree in a related field. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
  • 5+ years of full-time experience in international education with significant study abroad advising experience in a tertiary institution.
  • Proficiency with social media marketing tools.
  • Extensive knowledge of the suite of study abroad program providers in the UNC Asheville catalog.
  • Experience serving as DSO or ARO and/or experience providing cultural programming for J-1 students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with federal immigration rules applying to F-1 and J-1 students.
  • Experience supporting intercultural communication skills-building associated with education abroad, the study abroad experience and the return, or experience teaching intercultural communication.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge and experience of Study Abroad opportunities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of overseas travel.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in the development and management of study abroad programs
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills including demonstrated ability to effectively and professionally communicate with students, staff, faculty and other stakeholders
  • Ability to present information well to students and faculty.
  • Knowledge of student visa process, immunizations, and other formalities required for Study Abroad.
