Job Summary

We seek a skilled Process Improvement (Lean) professional to integrate Lean principles and Human & Organizational Performance (HOP) practices into our ongoing Lean transformation to drive continuous improvement and operational excellence. This role is a subject matter expert in process improvement (Lean) and will integrate HOP principles into the implementation. This role functions as an internal consultant and coach that collaborates with leaders across the enterprise to ensure that engagement, learning, and improvement are built into the way we plan, execute, and learn from successful/unsuccessful work. The successful candidate will have a strong background in Lean methodologies and a modern approach to human performance, focusing on reducing error and promoting a learning culture.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for developing workplace culture and practical experience working with professionals from the frontline to senior leadership through a consultative approach.

You will be joining a team of internal specialists who shape behaviors to reduce errors and reduce waste. Our team leverages psychology, worker engagement, process improvement, and coaching to identify opportunities and work with leadership to create and execute enhancement strategies.

Job Description

Key Accountabilities

1. Facilitate workshops, meetings, events, training sessions on Lean principles, tools, and practices to build capabilities across teams.

2. Role model and encourage a dedication to continuous systematic improvement (Kaizen), promoting a continuous improvement mindset at all organizational levels.

3. Teach and foster the pillars and methods of Lean

  • Respect for People Going and Kaizen are the two pillars of process improvement.
  • Go to Gemba to learn from and with the workforce.
  • Seek to remove overburden on the worker. Make it easy to get right and hard to get wrong.
  • Challenge and enable workers to see and remove waste daily.

4. Foster a Learning & Improving Organization

  • Use Learning Teams and event analysis to reduce human error impacts and strengthen operational reliability.
  • Develop systems and practices that encourage continuous learning from everyday work, reinforcing a proactive approach to safety.
  • Lead initiatives to gather and act on workforce feedback regarding potential hazards and improvement areas, fostering a collaborative approach to safety and efficiency.
  • Encourage a Psychologically Safe culture where successful work, incidents and near-misses are viewed as learning opportunities, building proactive systems to reinforce safety and drive improvements.
  • Empower employees to report errors, share ideas, and voice concerns in a high-trust environment that values open communication for continuous improvement.
  • Encourage employees at all levels to proactively take ownership (accountability) of their performance and give discretionary effort to ensure success and improvement.

5. Increase your knowledge of and integrate Human and Organizational Performance to reduce human error and increase system/human interface resilience.

o The 5 Principles of Human and Organizational Performance:

  • Error is normal - people are fallible and even our best make mistakes
  • Error-likely situations are predictable and manageable- Safety & Resilience are not the absence of events. Resilience/safety are the presence of defenses.
  • Context influences behavior - the environment in which work occurs drives workers' behaviors and actions.
  • Blame fixes nothing. Only learning yields improvement - We can either learn and improve or blame and punish - but we can't do both.
  • Our Response to failure matters- We can either get even or get better. Learning is a deliberate improvement strategy

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Engineering, Human Factors, Occupational Safety, Operations Management, Human Resource Development, or a related field.

Experience:

o Minimum 5+ years in operations management

o 7+ years of managerial or consulting experience will be considered in lieu of education and experience.

Skills:

o Knowledge of Lean principles and human performance management

o Proven ability to lead cultural change and foster an environment of continuous learning.

o Excellent problem-solving, coaching, and analytical skills.

o Strong communication and interpersonal skills- All business is the people business.

Preferred Education and Experience:

* Certification in Lean Six Sigma, HOP, coaching, or human factors.

* Advanced Degree in related fields of study.

* 3 years of Human and Organizational Performance experience

* Power generation or related field experience.

* Experience working as an internal or external consultant.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS (depending on your home/work location):

Percent of time: 15-50% (depending on your home/work location)

Overnight required: 10-25% (depending on your home/work location)
