Essential Job Statements

Independent action(s) required: Cardiac Sonographer/Technologists with minimal assistance or independently performs or assist the licensed independent practitioner in the completion of ultrasound imaging exams. Cardiac Sonographer/Technologists with minimal assistance or independently complete imaging exams based on physicians written order, department protocols, and institutional safety standards. Cardiac Sonographer/Technologist represent the goals, values, and vision of VCU Health System. Ensures adherence to regulatory standards, health system and department policies, procedures, processes, and guidelines applicable to role. Resolves basic service delivery issues.

Additional position requirements: Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your specific manager or supervisor. Schedules, including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing needs of the health system. Weekend and other after-hours coverage may be required based on workload demand and staffing needs of the health system. Sonographer/Technologists are considered "Essential Employees" who may be required to report to work in accordance with the VCUHS Policy.

Patient Population

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide equitable care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit.

Demonstrates knowledge and related competencies of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age, specific needs and to provide the equitable care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures. Infant (1-12 months), Pediatrics (1-12 years), Adolescents (13-17 years), Adults (18-64 years), Geriatrics (65 years and older)

Employment Qualifications

Required Education:Graduation from an allied health education programs specific to sonography and 12 months full time clinical cardiac ultrasound experience, meeting educational requirements for certification from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography [RDCS (AE and/or PE)], or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (RCS or RCCS); OR Hold at least one certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography [RDCS (AE and/or PE)] or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (RCS or RCCS); OR Graduation from an CAAHEP or CMA Accredited Program in cardiac sonography, or graduation from a minimum of a 2-year JRC Accredited Program in Cardiac Sonography that is recognized by the ARRT or Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, JRC-DMS; OR

Graduation from a bachelor's degree program and hold at least one certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography [RDCS (AE and/or PE)] or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (RCS or RCCS);

Preferred Education:Graduation from an CAAHEP or CMA Accredited Program in cardiac sonography, or Graduation from a minimum of a 2-year JRC Accredited Program in Cardiac Sonography that is recognized by the ARRT or Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, JRC-DMS; OR Graduation from a bachelor's degree program in cardiac sonography.

Licensure/Certification Required:For new graduates of qualifying educational programs: Must pass certification exam within 4 months of reaching eligibility status.

Shift:Monday-Friday 8am-5pm (some on-call required)

We want to ensure that children with heart disease receive the care they need to thrive into adulthood.

* Be a proactive and positive team member.

* Deliver age-appropriate care while recognizing patient conditions and ensuring successful completion of procedures.

* Have knowledge of complex congenital heart disease and surgical palliation with the ability to obtain echocardiographic images to fully assess all the relative anatomy necessary for accurate diagnosis and management.

* Remain sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of patients through good communication, assessment, monitoring, and care skills.

* Recognize patient conditions essential for successful completion of the procedure and exercised independent professional and ethical judgment.

* Obtain vitals such as patient weight, height and blood pressure as well as other pertinent information depending on patient status.

* Maintain an organized and clean machine and work area.

* Assist with scheduling patients to the echo schedule.

* Demonstrate effective communication with a multi-disciplinary team.

Education Requirements:

* Satisfactory completion of one of the following:

o Graduate from an Allied Health Education Program specific to cardiac sonography, one year of on the job training in echocardiography, OR

o Graduate from a CAAHEP accredited sonography program OR

* Current Pediatric Echocardiography or Congenital Cardiac Sonography credential

o Such as: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) from American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARMDS) in Adult Echocardiography (AE) or Pediatric Echocardiography (PE), OR

o Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS) from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)

o CPR/BLS

* If not obtained prior to hire, Pediatric Echocardiography (ARMDS) or Congenital Cardiac Sonography (CCI) registry is required one year after hire.

* Ability to perform fetal echocardiography

* 5 years' experience in pediatric echocardiography lab
