Join Our Team as a Materials Project Engineer! Are you passionate about Technology Breakthrough and Innovation? S&C Electric Company is seeking a dynamic individual to join our TBI department. As a Materials Project Engineer, you'll be crucial in ensuring smooth operations and supporting our diverse team. The Materials Project Engineer at S&C plays a critical role in supporting the development and commercialization of new medium voltage distribution switchgear products for the utility market. This role focuses on the formulation, design, prototyping, and evaluation of mechanical and electrically insulating structures and components. The Materials Project Engineer works closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that new product concepts are effectively developed and brought to market. The Technology & Breakthrough Innovation (T&BI) team drives the creation of new product solutions for S&C's customers by exploiting new technologies and enabling breakthrough product development for the fast-evolving intelligent grid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVrfxa4JM0A). Technically sophisticated on the inside, S&C's future systems must deliver unparalleled user experience, outstanding long-term value, and profitable revenue streams. This role supports developing and commercializing new products and technologies using specialized laboratory and testing facilities. Key Responsibilities: * Actively contributing to a multidisciplinary engineering team to develop new medium voltage switchgear technology * Analyzing existing and proposed designs and processes to make recommendations that optimize for performance, consistency, and cost-effectiveness * Providing expert opinions on material selection and specifications for specific switchgear applications * Self-starting investigations to seek root causes for design performance using formal problem-solving techniques with minimal supervisory guidance * Conceptualizing, designing, prototyping, building, and testing physical prototypes * Pursuing assignments with a "can do" attitude and sense of urgency What you'll Need To Succeed: Required * BS or higher in Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgy, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering, and 1 to 5 years of experience performing metallurgical analysis * Materials characterization expertise including SEM * Experience in steel, copper, high-temperature alloys, and powder metals * Experience in polymeric material, especially thermoset * Proven track record of substantive contributions, both analytical and conceptual, to new product development * Strong skills in identifying risks, developing mitigation strategies and alternative solutions, and resolving issues independently and in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team * 3D CAD experience and experience with design engineering activities * Ability to manage time and multiple tasks with a strong sense of urgency * Ability to combine disparate ideas into unique solutions * Strong verbal (presentation) and written (reports) skills Environmental and Hazardous Conditions * Continuously working indoors/outdoors in an air-conditioned office/manufacturing based environment. * Infrequently exposed to fumes/vapors/dust/gases/odors/mist/toxic chemicals/radiation/vibration/grease/oils/radiation/lasers/other etc. * Occasionally exposed to low/moderate/high noise levels including machinery/vehicles/forklifts/office equipment/office traffic etc. * Occasionally working around energized equipment with the risk of electrocution/scalding/burns/other etc. * Infrequently exposed to wet humid/outdoor weather/extreme cold (non-weather)/extreme heat (non-weather) conditions/other etc. * Infrequently working with machinery with moving parts/vehicles/forklifts/heavy machinery/sharp objects/other etc. Travel Occasionally required to travel and work extended hours when necessary.
