DESCRIPTION

The Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health (ID-GPH) in the Department of Medicine at UCSD aims to conduct cutting-edge research on health related issues and service utilization facing vulnerable or marginalized populations, both domestically and internationally. ID-GPH promotes scholarly research, teaching, service and global health leadership and training based on the principles of reducing health inequities.

The Phage Therapy Senior Program Manager is a strategic part of the team for the "Center for Innovative Phage Applications and Therapeutics", (IPATH), the first bacteriophage therapy center in North America. IPATH works to develop clinical trials for practical clinical applications as new weapons against multidrug-resistant bacteria.

The incumbent will be responsible for the support, coordination and management of IPATH. Responsibilities will include assistance with grant preparation and submission; assistance with the development and execution of the clinical trials process; assistance with patient visit preparation and coordination; assist with eIND applications for clinical trials and compassionate use cases; preparation of reports and slides; managing IPATH-related budgets; oversight of specimen distribution, storage and management for IPATH and other collaborating labs. In addition, the Program Manager will be responsible for fielding, managing and documenting patient and physician inquiries, acts as a liaison with the UCSD development office, coordinates events planning when appropriate, and manages the IPATH newsletter, and website. Additionally, this role will be responsible for Material Transfer Agreement (MTA), NDA, and other agreement submissions, as needed by IPATH.

The position requires involvement in the scientific, regulatory, administrative and budgetary goals of the program, excellent communication, project-reporting skills, and strict adherence to timelines and milestones.

Fulfills primary responsibility for a specific area of research within a broader research grant program initiative.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Nine years of related experience, education/training, OR Biology degree, or related field plus three years of related experience/training

  • Academic background and experience in selected area of research required. Prior experience in research management, grant management, grant consulting with a life science background. Advanced degree in related scientific discipline and /or equivalent experience / training.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated experience with communicating the status and content of scientific projects to a broad variety of people in written form, in person on the telephone and email.

  • Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills. Knowledge and experience to independently research and remedy high level issues and problems as they arise.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results. Ability to communicate with individuals from a variety of backgrounds. Possess skills of tact, poise, diplomacy, confidentiality and hospitality with a demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative environment with a diverse set of researchers, administrators and staff.

  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers, managers and teams, including clinical and laboratory team members.

  • Proven program planning and management of projects. Excellent project management skills and a background in research coordination including resource allocation, fiscal, personnel, and management of grants/gifts and contracts. Proven experience planning, implementing, managing and evaluating projects with the ability to prioritize multiple and complex responsibilities and to work effectively with frequent interruptions and changing priorities. Ability to create work plans and timelines to ensure timely completions of projects.

  • Experience generating and analyzing project timelines, resources, and budget information. Strong understanding of financial resource planning systems, processes and ability to coordinate project-level budget/resource estimates and manage actual costs vs. planned cost.

  • Strong leadership skills including meeting facilitation, cross-functional team integration, strategic thinking and advising. Must be able to create an environment for collaborative work necessary for the team to be effective.

  • Experience with planning and leadership of operational and research/development initiatives. Demonstrated management skills with the ability to maintain focus and to operate in an organized and effective manner in an environment that may have rapidly shifting demands and priorities.

  • Ability to handle multiple projects and priorities with exceptional organization and time management skills. Proven experience managing multiple tasks, often with competing deadlines including problem solving, negotiating, decision-making research and analysis, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to write interesting and succinct copy for correspondence, brochures, and other public relations material.

  • Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.

  • Proven advanced analytical skills to evaluate information, procedures or situations to define a problem or objective, identify relevant concerns, recognize alternatives, formulate logical and objective conclusions, and prepare reports. Experience in interpreting and summarizing complex administrative, scientific and financial information and narrative reports.

  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and use excellent judgment in decision making activities. Demonstrated ability to "deliver and get the job done". Must be proactive, a problem solver and be highly results-oriented.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Proficiency with digital workplace tools including but not limited to Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Office Suite, Slack, and OneDrive.

  • Proficiency in understanding academic research articles, and how they can be translated into clinical standard operating procedures.

  • Proficiency with clinical patient test results, including antibiotic susceptibility of drug-resistant microorganisms.

  • Deep understanding of the bacteriophage field, including contributions to publications on the topic of bacteriophage therapy.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $85,400 - $156,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $40.90 - $75.10

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
