Reporting to the Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer, UCSF Medical Center Adult Services (Parnassus, Mission Bay & Mount Zion). The Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) provides consistent clinical leadership and nursing practice oversight for (included but not limited to) the Parnassus, Mission Bay and Mount Zion campuses and expected to partner closely with key stakeholders including, but not limited to the following: Adult Chief Nursing Officer, System Chief Nurse Executive, and other organizational leaders. The ACNO will support, and collaborate in, strategic direction, leadership, planning, organization and general management for all aspects of patient care to ensure integration of services and compliance with long range objectives, strategies, including the provision of excellent quality services, and the practice of sound business practices. Supports and provides vision and directional support for patient and quality of care issues. Ensures integration of services as appropriate across nursing and patient care services across the health system. Ensures professional nursing standards are uniform and maintained across adult nursing services.

The Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) has responsibility for adult patient care services and nursing practice, and overall administrative, operational, and financial functions of these services throughout UCSF Health for the following, but not limited to: Mission Bay and Mount Zion campuses. This key member of the nursing leadership proactively identifies progressive approaches to deliver patient care and enhance overall patient satisfaction, and culture of nursing. The Associate Chief Nursing Officer will have a patient first philosophy, foster strong partnerships with the medical staff and bring an inclusive and collaborative approach to the Department of Nursing.

Financial Management:
Leads in financial management to assure revenue, expenses, contribution margin, and FTEs meet or are favorable to budget. Works with their direct report to prepare and submit budgets completely and timely, knows and understands the details of the budget reports, forecasts and accurately projects expenses; takes corrective action to address negative variances. Identifies and proposes capital budget items appropriately; prepares adequate capital equipment proposal and justification. Link budget decision and resource allocation to strategic initiatives.

Strategic Performance Improvement:
Maintains high quality and service-oriented reputation for the departments and health system. Participates in the ongoing development of the strategic initiatives and outcomes by integrating across the health system. Leads the implementation of strategic plans, annual goals, work plans, policies and budget service that is consistent with business plans of UCSF Health. Develop data metrics to ensure operational/cross functional needs are met across the health system. Resolve system issues within and across services.

Regulatory Accreditation Standards:
Ensures that compliance and accreditation standards are met in all areas of responsibility. Develops and maintains departmental policy and procedures, and complies with all applicable regulatory standards.

Leadership:
Foster a work environment that supports teamwork, open communication and engagement across the health system. Establish communication standards of performance, provides timely feedback and assures accountability to establish expectations. Stays up to date on new developments in the field and incorporates such in the department's scope of service. Reports directly to the CNO and participates in all long-term and short-term strategic planning for the hospital(s). Serves on various system committees and projects to share in decision-making concerning the delivery of care and operations of the hospital. Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors, adheres to all UCSF policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service. Promotes individual professional growth development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals, which contributes to the success of the organization. Other duties as assigned.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $290,984 - $325,000 (Annual Rate).

Adult Services:
UCSF Health is internationally renowned for providing highly specialized and innovative care. This is an exciting opportunity for a contemporary nurse leader to proactively identify progressive approaches to deliver patient care, further enhancing patient satisfaction and the culture of nursing and patient care services. The Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) will partner with aligning clinical and nursing practices across disciplines and achieving national metrics. It is an opportunity to join a dedicated, mission driven nursing and patient care services team with very low turnover. Total of 698 adult licensed beds, and VP, Chief Nursing Officer with Direct FTE's of: ~2200, Indirect FTE's of: ~700, Direct headcount of: ~2800, Indirect headcount of: ~900.

UCSF Health Adult Facilities include: UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights, UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion and UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay.
UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights is home to inpatient and outpatient services, as well as research institutes and educational facilities. Parnassus includes a 15-story hospital, Ambulatory Care Center, and Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital and Clinics. Looking ahead: Read up on future developments at Parnassus.
The newest campus, Mission Bay, is home to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco, UCSF Betty Irene Moore Women's Hospital, UCSF Bakar Cancer Hospital and the UCSF Bakar Precision Cancer Medicine Building, in addition to numerous outpatient services for children and adults.
UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion is home to outpatient clinics, inpatient care, and surgical facilities, as well as support services for patients and families. The UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Women's Health Center (a nationally designated center of excellence in women's health) all have locations at the Mount Zion campus.

Required Qualifications


  • Minimum five to seven years of increasingly responsible experience in hospital management and strategic planning, preferably in an academic medical center.
  • Master's degree in nursing and Master's degree in business, nursing, healthcare administration or a related field. PhD or DNP preferred.
  • Advanced degree in nursing and health care administration, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CA RN License.
  • Comprehensive and thorough understanding of all elements of health care delivery, including strategy, business planning, operations and financial conditions.
  • Change management skills to continually transition adult nursing and patient care services from current state to future state. Expertise in evaluating Health System and organizational issues, initiating actions to make change, planning change with stakeholder buy-in and executing the plan while being flexible to the changing landscape
  • Advanced conceptual clinical base with expertise in professional practice models, evidence-based practice, systems thinking and quality improvement.
  • Collaborative leadership skills to function in a highly complex and matrixed organizational environment, demonstrates expert skill in building collaborative relationships, developing strategies, and engaging in constructive problem-solving.
  • Relationship building skills to develop outstanding relationships at all levels of the organization in an environment that is managed through influence and relationships.
  • Experience in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging and Anti-Racism.
  • Expertise in communication (verbal, non-verbal, and written) with strength in creating partnerships to ensure success and collaboration.

  • Expertise in all aspects of assigned functions, as well as development and management of operational and capital budgets.
  • Sets high standards of behavior, performance, quality, credibility, and integrity; exhibits judgment and business acumen necessary to raise performance to levels that would not otherwise be achieved.
  • Knowledge of management information systems and its relevance to nursing practice, quality and safety.
  • Knowledge of strategic planning and its relevance to nursing operations and future direction.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the roles of teaching, research and patient care in the academic medical center and active participation in improvements relevant to each mission.
  • Ability to comply with all nursing practice and Health System policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative and clinical practice. Ability to comply with activities mandated by The Joint Commission/Title 22, CLIA, etc.
  • Prior experience in a unionized setting/environment.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Masters Degree in Nursing.
  • Previous ACNO or CNO experience.
  • National Nursing Specialty Certification (e.g., NE-BC, NEA-BC, CENP) - within one year of hire
  • Served in a Magnet organization or understands the principles of shared governance and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Direct experience with Lean management and/or an understanding of the Principles of Lean Continuous Improvement.
  • Knowledge of UKG/Kronos payroll system and reporting capabilities.

License/Certification

Must have California RN License.
