8-Hour Day Shifts

A Technical Assistant, under the direction of the Manager of Radiology Services or assigned leader, is responsible for transporting patients; assisting in lifting, moving, and attending to patients; utilizing direct patient care duties. They are responsible for maintaining cleanliness of transportation equipment and patient waiting and dressing areas; assisting in the radiology offices and assigned imaging area. May be assigned specific technical responsibilities for preparation of patients, assisting technologists as needed. Functions resulting in an exposure of patients to radiation, ultrasound or magnetic sequences may not be assigned. Assists with office work & secretarial duties as warranted. Assists technologist with patient care when needed and the duties deemed necessary to support the mission and goals of UnityPoint Health- St. Luke's.

Responsibilities

Communication and Interaction

  • Demonstrates good patient communication and performs patient care activities. Assists technologists with transportation of patients to and from the Imaging Department
  • Demonstrates professional conduct towards patients and visitors and maintains privacy of the patients, their test results and records.
  • Maintains communication with Imaging Administration, staff and physicians in a professional manner. Seeks the advice of the NM Leader or Radiology Manager with problems before implementing a solution.
  • Maintains sufficient supplies in the dressing room/clean utility areas so that patient care is not affected by untimely depletion of supplies. Monitors waste & utilizes supplies wisely
  • Promotes & exhibits a positive public relations image through productive and professional interactions with nurses, physicians, visitors, patients, peers, supervisors, and other hospital personnel.
  • Facilitates professional learning environment for students and new hires through in-service instruction and clinical supervision during patient transportation/care duties.
  • Actively participates in Departmental PI projects; including but not limited to, Press Ganey scores, Departmental Goals & personal goals
  • Development of Technical Assistant role by attending various departmental Meetings & educational opportunities.
  • Positively adapts to change; is open to new ideas, takes on new responsibilities; adjusts plans to meet changing needs. Portrays positive attitude to others regarding system/departmental changes
  • Ensures & works to improve customer satisfaction, sets realistic customer expectations, solves customer problems, meets commitments to customers, seeks out customer input, responds to internal customers. RL Events Reporting when warranted

  • Communicates closely with Imaging staff regarding patient consents, isolation concerns, patient preps or other vital information that may delay the study
  • Prioritization of work, ability to make independent decisions based on needs of Imaging Department

Equipment and Regulatory Management

  • Utilizes information systems and prepares all documentation necessary to ensure accurate and consistent information work flows. Knowledge of basic clerical functions, including EMR & PACS
  • Performs care and light maintenance of the transport equipment. This includes cleaning and inspection (quality assurance) of the equipment for safe usage can assess equipment problems. Communication of issues with appropriate leader
  • Maintains knowledge & actively participates in following of current department protocols and equipment.
  • Accurately maintains necessary documentation and records to comply with regulatory guidelines established by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the DNV (Det Norske Veritas) accreditation body
  • Responsible for contributing to the annual inspection process and adherence to all mandated regulations and standards.
  • Follows all departmental, hospital regulations regarding infection control

Quality and Procedure Management

  • Correlates/Communicates modality exams with other tests - to give the patient the best care, in the most efficient setting
  • Produces high quality patient care with precision, accuracy, and in a timely manner for the Imaging staff
  • Is attentive to detail and accuracy, is committed to excellence, looks for improvements continuously, communicates ideas for improvement with appropriate leader
  • Proactively identifies problems and communicates these concerns with NM Leader, seeks out new responsibilities, acts on opportunities, generates new ideas, practices self-development.
  • Anticipates and prevents problems, defines problems, overcomes obstacles, generates alternative solutions, helps solve team problems.
  • Practices & monitors safety precautions for patients, employees & oneself during all transports
  • Disposes of all body fluids, hazardous materials, and chemicals in an appropriate manner according to OSHA standards and guidelines.
  • Adheres to hospital & departmental safety regulations, guidelines, policies, procedures, & protocols.
  • Accountability for completing daily departmental tasks, completing work either in a team or independent setting. Team work in all aspects including patient care if warranted
  • Rotates through all schedules & all areas of TA responsibilities as assigned by the NM Leader

Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

* CNA certification in the state of IA- Preferred

Experience:

* Experience in a healthcare/direct patient care setting -- Preferred

License(s)/Certification(s):

* Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

  • Current CPR certification or obtained within 30 days for new hire
  • CNA certification in the state of IA- Preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

* Direct Patient Care

* Computer Skills relating to various EMR & Radiology Imaging Systems, PACS

* Machines: Various technical systems including but not limited to: IV Pumps, Suction Machines, RIS (Radiology Applications), EMR, PACS, Various office equipment (including but not limited to fax, copier, scanner, digitizer, CD Burner), Telephone skills

  • Equipment: Wheelchairs, Gurneys, Steris Chairs, Geri Chairs, Walkers, Gait Belts, ambulatory Aids

* Administrative: The Technical Assistant shall transport patients to and from the department in a timely fashion with concern to patient comfort and safety. He/she will have communication skills necessary to deal with nursing units, technologists and physician staff. He/she is responsible for ensuring appropriate paperwork is transported with patients. He/she will assist with office work, plus other duties when needed, and keep the Department in a clean, orderly fashion. He/she must be able to concentrate on the task at hand and consistently follow procedures, must demonstrate adaptability, flexibility, cooperation and maintain an attitude of professionalism while strictly adhering to all hospital and department safety regulations, guidelines, policies and procedures, including MRI room safety guidelines.
