Position Summary
The Academic Advisor serves as the primary point of contact for students seeking academic and student services in their college. Academic Advisors assist students in developing an academic plan from their orientation to graduation; to achieve their personal and professional goals including providing information on degree programs, and certificates; course selection; and other academic options, such as study abroad, research opportunities, internships, service learning, living, and learning communities, etc.

May develop curriculum, teach, and provide direct instructional support for First Year Seminar Courses and other campus development classes.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide academic advising support to business students at all levels including assistance with course selection, identification of individual barriers to student success, and working with students to develop effective strategies and plans to achieve their academic and professional goals.
  • Engages in student advising with current and incoming students, evaluating students' degree progress/ eligibility, educating and providing guidance concerning degree requirements, programs, academic and professional planning.
  • Evaluates students' progress in their respective programs, evaluating degree requirements, counseling and providing related guidance and direction. Educates students regarding College, University and Campus policies and procedures, along with course registration and selection. Interprets and enforces academic policies.
  • Intervenes and refers students to resources throughout the University community as may be needed. Exercises professional discretion and judgment to troubleshoot issues and problems that may arise. Documents pertinent and required information related to interactions with students. Maintains and updates related databases as needed, to ensure that student records accurately reflect degree progress and academic status.
  • Implement projects designed to achieve student service goals such as new student orientation, coordination of tutoring services, student petition processes, and transfer course articulation. May assist with student recruitment, scholarship selection, and outreach to faculty.
  • Provides guidance to students in navigating the petition process for exceptions to academic policies.
  • Provides students and prospective with information regarding available College and University resources and opportunities. Educates and informs prospective students and their family/friends about college degree programs and opportunities to aid in the recruitment of new students. May conduct new student orientation programs, supporting students in their transition to college, the University and promotes their academic success.
  • Collaborate with other academic advisors, career advisors, faculty, and leadership to identify potential barriers to student achievement and participate in the development of strategies to address these barriers.
  • Assist in the facilitation training and development of new advisors, as needed.
  • Serve on unit, college, and campus committees, as necessary. Participates on committees and/or teams as needed and/or assigned. Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

  • Pay and Benefits:

    The salary range for this position is $55,000 - $65,000

    Qualifications:

    Minimum Qualifications
    Bachelor's Degree, Master's degree preferred.

    A minimum of one year of professional work experience required.

    Strong business acumen, along with presentation, interpersonal, management, communication and analytical skills. Project management skills, including the ability to prioritize effectively.

    Ability to handle a high volume of work, execute multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities and meet deadlines.

    Excellent communication, organization, presentation and computer/pc skills are required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office to include: Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint, along with other related software.

    Preferred Qualifications
    Professional work experience in university student services preferred.

    Knowledge of business curricula and student development theory preferred.

    Demonstrated work experience in student/academic advising, counseling, or other related field in an institution of higher learning preferred.

    Proficiency in Banner and iAdvise/Starfish.

    Familiarity with student development theory and FERPA preferred.
