Departmental Overview

The largest of UC Berkeley's colleges and schools - encompassing three-quarters of its undergraduates and half of its faculty and graduate students - the College of Letters & Science is the great, big heart of Berkeley. The Carpenter provides journey-level carpentry and cabinet-making support for the College of Letters & Science teaching and research operations. Under the general guidance of an assigned lead, the incumbent performs custom design, fabrication, and installation of new fixtures, as well as maintenance and modification of existing cabinets, countertops, wall and floor coverings, and room fixtures. This role requires experience and skill in working with various materials, including plywood, hardwood, softwood, wood composites, phenolics, epoxy resin, plastic laminates, sheet metal, metal studs, sheetrock, masonry, flooring, ceiling tiles, wood finishes, and paint. The Carpenter also collaborates on interdepartmental projects as needed to meet recharge goals.

Responsibilities

  • Perform construction, maintenance, alteration or repair of wooden and/or metal structures on campus buildings and facilities. Fabricate and install and/or repair counters, cabinets, hardware, shelving, benches, tables, partitions, floors, wall frames, windows openings and doors, including demolition and removal. Uses materials including but not limited to plywood, hardwood, softwood, wood composites, phenolics, epoxy resin, plastic laminates, sheet metal, metal studs, sheetrock, masonry, and floor and ceiling tiles, wood finishes and paint. Uses modern work methods.
  • Initiates orders for materials and expendable supplies. Maintains the carpenter shop and associated hand and power tools In a safe, clean, organized and serviceable condition.
  • Practice safe work habits on a daily basis and in the spirit of the University HPP objectives.
  • Instructs work-study students safe and appropriate hand/power tool use, and material handling methods. Directs students in building maintenance duties.
  • Performs general building moving tasks including the installation or relocation of scientific equipment. Provides manual help as required to minimize property damage during emergencies
    such as water leaks and electrical power failures. Performs sheet metal work on brackets, shelves and carts, as required. Performs other miscellaneous building tasks as required.
  • Completes work orders, timesheets, and administrative paperwork as required by the Workshop's Manager.
Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated journeymen experience in carpentry.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Ability to operate woodworking machinery.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Able to lift 75 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in an occupied laboratories and offices.
