The Emergency Room RN is responsible for coordinating the care of patients and families utilizing the nursing process. Summary of duties include: performing a physical and psychological assessment, collection of current symptoms, obtaining a detailed patient history, utilizing nursing knowledge for critical thinking, planning of care, prioritizing of cares, evaluating response to interventions and planning for the needs of the patient and family.

Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

  • Collects current symptoms, as well as a detailed patient history and then consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient cares and interventions.
  • Performs triage, while considering both physical and psychosocial elements.
  • Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocol.
  • Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.
  • Records patients' current vital signs per standard.
  • Works directly with physicians, assisting them during exams, diagnostic testing and treatments.
  • Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, intravenous) and records prescribed medications.
  • Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse.
  • Provides IV therapy.
  • Cleans and bandages wounds.
  • Provides basic, bedside care.
  • Maintains proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment to care for patients.
  • Reports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agencies.
  • Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.

Development & Patient Education

  • Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance nursing practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research.
  • Assess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient's and their families' age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
  • Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.
  • Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.

Basic UPH Performance Criteria

  • Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, JCAHO, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements as outlined by the on-line education policy.
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Education:

Graduate of accredited nursing program

BSN degree

Experience:

Prefer one (1) year of Emergency Department clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency.

License(s)/Certification(s):

* Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.

* Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification prior to hire.

* Must obtain and maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support within 6 months of hire

* Trauma Nurse Core Course within one year of hire.

* Must obtain NIHSS education within 90 days of hire and maintain every two years thereafter

* Completion of four hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually

* Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

* Current certification in Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Trauma Nurse Core Course

* Must be CPI/MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behaviors) certified within the first 6 months of hire and maintain certification throughout employment (renewal every 2 years).

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

Microsoft Office - basic computer skills.

Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.

Other:

Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.

Work may occasionally require travel to other UPH facilities. May drive a UPH vehicle, rental or own vehicle.
