Job Title: ControllerSalary: $150,000 - $175,000 (commensurate with experience)Location: Jersey City (on-site 5 days a week, with potential for remote work on Fridays) Position Overview

The Controller will oversee the financial operations of the company, ensuring efficient management of accounting functions for both the company and its partners. This leadership role is pivotal in guiding the monthly closing process, billing, accounts payable/receivable, cash flow management, and budget planning. The Controller will work closely with external CPA firms for the completion of annual audits and tax filings, and will be instrumental in developing and refining internal controls, processes, and systems aimed at enhancing efficiency and maintaining financial accuracy. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with strong leadership skills, capable of fostering a team-oriented and process-driven financial environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Financial Oversight: Manage the monthly close process, including billing, accounts payable and receivable, and cash flow management.
  • Reporting and Communication: Ensure the accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, presenting key results to internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Assist in the creation of annual property budgets and forecasts, ensuring alignment with company financial goals.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Prepare work papers to support monthly financial statements, property budgets, property audits, and tax filings.
  • Internal Controls: Establish, document, and maintain effective internal controls to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Process Optimization: Identify and implement strategies to improve internal systems, streamline reporting timelines, and uphold financial data integrity.
  • Team Management: Lead and mentor the accounting team, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Systems Oversight: Oversee the management and setup of the company's financial reporting systems, ensuring reliability and functionality.
  • Compliance: Monitor all accounts and ledgers for adherence to GAAP standards, regulatory guidelines, and partner requirements.
  • Ad Hoc Projects: Support additional projects and tasks as needed, contributing to the overall financial strategy of the company.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Financial Acumen: Strong knowledge of GAAP, taxation, and financial reporting, with expertise in data analysis and forecasting techniques.
  • Multitasking & Organization: Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively while maintaining high-quality standards and meeting deadlines.
  • Team Collaboration: A proactive and responsive team player with excellent communication skills at all organizational levels, including with external parties.
  • Tech-Savvy: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and YARDI software, with a knack for adopting new tools to improve financial operations.
  • Problem Solving & Strategy: Demonstrated ability to think strategically and offer insights based on data analysis and business trends.
  • Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with the real estate, construction, commercial, and multi-family sectors.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, capable of pivoting to meet changing business needs.
Experience
  • Minimum 10-15 years of progressively responsible experience in a real estate management or related environment, with a strong background in financial leadership.
Education
  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business administration is required.

  • the individual's skill sets, experience and training;

With that said, as required by local law, Vaco believes that the following salary range referenced above reasonably estimates the base compensation for an individual hired into this position in geographies that require salary range disclosure. The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
