Senior Advanced Systems Engineer

System design including Use Case and thread-based modeling for SW messaging systems.
DoD **Active Secret DoD Clearance is required at the time of hire**
Position Overview:
As a Systems Engineer for the SDA GMI program, you will be a key cross-functional team member responsible for the design, development, and deployment of advanced ground operational systems. This role includes system design and modeling responsibilities, with a specific focus on Use Case and thread-based modeling for software messaging systems. You will contribute to a broad range of engineering activities including requirements analysis, system design, integration, testing, and performance analysis.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform comprehensive requirements analysis and functional analysis, including development of system use cases and thread-based modeling for messaging systems.
  • Conduct requirements management, defining allocations to subsystem elements and performing detailed trade studies for system design.
  • Lead system design activities, ensuring the design meets both performance and security specifications while considering operational environment constraints.
  • Support systems integration, verification, and validation of software and hardware subsystems, ensuring alignment with design and customer specifications.
  • Lead and perform system-level technical planning, including cost and risk analyses, supportability, and effectiveness evaluations for subsystems and system elements.
  • Design and implement security measures such as identification, authentication, access control, and auditing within software and messaging systems to ensure compliance with DoD standards and security specifications.
  • Provide system accreditation/certification evaluation and test support, ensuring the technical security features are effectively designed and operational.
  • Support the development of technical documentation for both new and fielded systems.
  • Participate in Modeling and Simulation (M&S) to optimize system design, validate system performance, and evaluate design trade-offs.
  • Research and analyze data, including vendor products, COTS components, and specifications, to determine the feasibility of proposed system designs and applications.
  • Support the generation of technical engineering products, adhering to applicable standards, processes, and tools across the system development life cycle.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams from various organizations (e.g., Iridium, SDA, Northrup, York, and Lockheed) to ensure successful program execution.
  • Contribute to the completion of complex projects, defining technical processes for system compatibility, and resolving design weaknesses.
  • Employ agile and efficient methodologies to quickly decompose system requirements and communicate impacts to minimize unnecessary complexity.
Qualifications:
  • Active Secret DoD Security Clearance required.
  • Proven experience in system design, including the use of Use Case and thread-based modeling techniques for messaging and communication systems.
  • Experience with systems integration and performance analysis, ensuring designs meet stringent security and performance standards.
  • Strong technical background in Modeling and Simulation (M&S) for system evaluation and optimization.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, working with diverse teams across organizations like Iridium, SDA, Northrup, York, and Lockheed.
  • Ability to think creatively, innovate, and make advanced decisions in complex technical environments.
Job Requirements
Required Skills / Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Systems Engineering or Science or Engineering or Mathematics.
  • Minimum of 8 years experience in designing, coding, or modeling satellite contact planning systems.
  • Minimum of 8 years experience in System design, including Use Case and thread-based modeling for SW messaging systems.
  • Minimum of 8 years experience in Interface Control Document (ICD) authoring through the system design through the Integration phase of the program.
Preferred Skills / Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree.
  • Agile experience.
  • Satellite communications knowledge.
  • Ground to Satellite communication knowledge.
  • Ground operations experience.
  • Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
  • People with agile program experience.
