The Radiology Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for utilizing gamma-emitting and positron-emitting radioactive materials for diagnostic imaging purposes, PET and SPECT instrumentation may be combined with CT to generate attenuation correction for molecular imaging and to produce three-dimensional images with or without contrast to enhance the evaluation of physiological processes at a molecular level. Also responsble for the use of sealed and unsealed radioactive materials for diagnostic imaging purposes.

Job Relationships

Reports to the Advanced Imaging Operations Manager

Principal Responsibilities

Maintain liaison with physicians to resolve problems and to advise concerning nuclear medicine procedures, techniques and equipment.

Order, measure, administer, record, store and dispose of radioisotopes.

Perform decontamination procedures in accordance with federal and state regulations if necessary.

Participate in radiation safety protocols and quality assurance testing relating to calibration and maintenance of equipment.

Recognize emergency patient conditions and initiate life-saving first aid when appropriate.

Inject patients with appropriate oral or intravenous medications as well as recognize and respond to adverse reactions to contrast material.

Operate PET and SPECT imaging systems with or without sealed sources of radioactive materials, x-ray tubes and diagnostic CT.

Document laboratory operations by utilizing non-imaging instrumentation of dose calibrators, survey instruments, probes and wells.

Participate in departmental inspections conducted by various licensing, regulatory and accrediting agencies.

Comply with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.

Adhere to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training & accomplishments as required per policy.

Provide excellent customer service and adhere to SC Way customer service philosophy.

Perform other job duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

Graduate of an accredited program. Experience preferred.

Licenses/Certificates

Possess and maintain active licensure with the IL Emergency Management Agency (IEMA).

Possess and maintain active certification/registration with either NMTCB or ARRT(NM). CPR certification per American Heart Association guidelines required within 30 days of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Proficient in venipuncture.

Must possess manual dexterity to use a keyboard and handle equipment.

Must be capable of pushing, pulling, stooping, bending and lifting.

Must be able to walk and/or stand for long periods.

Working Environment

Molecular Imaging Department clinical setting.
