Position Summary |
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.
The Security department is seeking a Director of Security, responsible for the overall execution of the Security department's operational plans and objectives. The Director leads and supervises all floor operation (i.e. Moving crew, snow removal, control room), ensuring the protection and safety of Museum visitors, staff, collections and facilities.
The ideal candidate brings a proactive approach to risk management, crisis response and team leadership in a dynamic, high-traffic environment. The Director reports to the Senior Director of Security and Safety.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
- Strategic Leadership & Planning:
- Develop and implement security strategies, policies and procedures aligned with the Museum's mission and goals.
- Supervise risk assessment initiatives, disaster planning and emergency response strategies.
- Establish standards and protocols to address potential security threats and vulnerabilities.
- Operational Management:
- Direct daily security operations across Museum facilities, including building access, visitor safety and asset protection.
- Lead a team of security personnel, including hiring, training and professional development.
- Collaborate with Museum leadership and external law enforcement agencies to maintain a safe and welcome environment for all visitors.
- Risk & Crisis Management:
- Lead crisis management effort, including response coordination during emergencies.
- Regularly evaluate and update emergency preparedness plans in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.
- Manage surveillance systems, security technologies and protocols for monitoring high-risk areas.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Serve as the primary liaison with local law enforcement, fire departments and emergency medical teams.
- Communicate security initiatives and protocols to internal partners, fostering a culture of safety and awareness.
- Work closely with other departments to ensure security measures support the Museum's public programs and events.
- Maintain a schedule that may require flexibility, including working some evenings/weekends, as necessary.
The expected salary range for the Director of Security is $145,000/annual - $165,000/annual. The

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience. |
Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, security management or another related field.
- 10 years dynamic management experience securing and protecting high-value assets and soft targets with high foot traffic.
- Exceptional leadership, communication and decision-making skills.
- Knowledge of industry standards for security operations, including risk assessment, surveillance and emergency response.
- Familiarity with security technology, access control systems and law enforcement protocols.

Physical Demands |
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
- Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
- Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
- Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.
- Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
- Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
