The Position

Department Summary

Development Sciences (DevSci) spans the entire drug discovery and development cycle - from early-stage research to drug commercialization. Part of the drug development pipeline in DevSci includes the preclinical safety evaluation of candidate therapeutic molecules by toxicologists and pathologists in the Department of Translational Safety to enable further evaluation in humans. Translational Safety is an integral part of DevSci. We contribute to the organization's success by providing scientific insights and ensuring the safety of molecules that advance through the pipeline to patients. We do this to support the DevSci vision to deliver the right drug in the right dose to the right patient. The Translational Safety organization is composed of integrated sub-functions. Investigative Toxicology is one of the sub-functions, where we are agile scientists who support the entire portfolio by leveraging innovative approaches to provide mechanistic safety data that enables efficient and smart decision making.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, CA, on-site.

The Opportunity

  • Validates in vitro assay platforms to assess drug-induced toxicity issues including, but not limited to, nephrotoxicity, gastrointestinal toxicity and neurotoxicity

  • Uncovering the mechanisms of drug-induced toxicity issues using multiple assay endpoints

  • Minimally, we expect the interested candidates to be curious and eager to learn about the overall drug development process

  • Support senior leaders as needed to deliver on critical business and/or portfolio activitie

  • Reimagine what's possible with emerging technologies that create and sustain long-term value (operationally and scientifically)

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education:

You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).
  • Pursuing a Master's or PhD Degree (enrolled student) is preferred.

Required Majors:

  • Biology Or related

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • General lab-related operation: reagent/compound solution/buffer/cell culture medium preparation, pipetting, maintaining cell culture including compound-treatment, assays, data analysis and reporting.

  • Specific purpose-dependent instrument operation.

  • Highly organized and detailed-oriented ability to present and speak in front of professionals.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Complements our culture and the standards that guide our daily behavior & decisions: Integrity, Courage, and Passion.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $23-$50 hourly. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
