Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) manages the 10-year, $2.1 billion Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, Los Alamos Field Office.

N3B is a limited liability company owned by HII Nuclear Inc. and BWX Technologies, joined by our critical subcontractors Longenecker and Associates and Tech2 Solutions.

N3B brings operational discipline, proven approaches and predictable results to the Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract.

Position Location:

This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position Summary

This position is for an early career Safety Basis Analyst and will support, under the guidance of a Senior Safety Basis Analyst, the safety basis activities to develop, review and maintain safety basis documents.

Safety Basis Analysts will participate in nuclear and non-nuclear risk and hazard analyses to ensure safe operations.

The duties may include but are not limited to; participation in hazard identification, hazard analysis, facility hazard categorization, accident analysis, selection of controls, and development of associated safety basis documents including Unreviewed Safety Question determinations, documented safety analysis, technical safety requirements, and safety assessment documents.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):

  • Proficient in MS Office to include MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • With supervision, participate in hazard analyses of nuclear operations, which defines functional specifications, and recommends credited controls to mitigate unacceptable hazards
  • Maintains safety basis documents and safety basis program procedures.
  • Aptitude to understand complex issues and develop creative solutions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate safety basis solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers and craft personnel
  • Aptitude in reading and understanding regulatory standards and requirements

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):

  • Ability to apply principles, concepts and techniques in general engineering
  • Skill and ability to understand critical strategic tasks and to interpret broad strategic requirements and develop plans to satisfy them
  • Level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job
  • Ability to perform complex professional tasks and to analyze and develop innovative solutions to problems, with supervision.
  • Ability to work with broad objectives and organize work to meet established objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of safety basis, under DOE regulations.
  • Knowledge of DOE, State, Federal, and industry standards, directives and regulations related to Safety Basis.

Education and Experience Required:

Level 1:

Bachelors' Degree in a related discipline. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the position's duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable.

Level 2:

Bachelor's degree combined with 3 to 5 years relative experience. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the position's duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable.

Education Equivalency: 2 years of relevant experience for 1 year of college.

Business Associations:

Level 1: Contacts are primarily with immediate supervisor and other personnel in the section or group.

Level 2: Frequent internal company and external contacts. Represents organization on specific projects.

Impact:

Level 1: Contributions are usually limited to task-related activities. Errors do not typically have a major effect on the organization.

Level 2: Contributes to the completion of organizational projects and goals. Errors in judgment or failure to achieve results would normally require a moderate expenditure of resources to rectify.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Normally assigned to perform work in an office environment. Only electrical hazards and other minor potential hazards normally found in an office environment are anticipated. Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the discipline. Office work environment.

Safety, Security, and Quality

While working to achieve N3B LLCC objectives, the Safety Basis Analyst will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner to include protecting the confidentiality and integrity of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This role will maintain required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security. Ability to obtain an L level Department of Energy security clearance.
