-Journeyman Carpenter who has completed a recognized apprenticeship or vocational program
-Eight years of progressive experience in carpentry trade.
-Five years of progressive painting experience.
-Familiar with the terminology of both trades along with technical information available in manuals, technical bulletins and manufacturers specifications and recommendations.

Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
This position's responsibilities include:
(1) perform carpentry maintenance (install, maintain and repair building hardware, including but not limited to doors, windows, floors, ceilings, and roofs in all university buildings) while adhering to accepted procedures and techniques of the carpenter trade; and
(2) prepare, paint, patch, finish and maintain all surfaces (wood, plaster, drywall, sheet rock, steel, concrete, brick, etc.) by recognized procedures and techniques of the painting trade. This position reports to the Carpentry Shop Supervisor.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Physical Plant is responsible for providing services relative to buildings and grounds maintenance, utilities, transportation, trash removal, central receiving, recycling, disposition of surplus property and moving and hauling. In addition the Physical Plants expanding responsibilities include providing support services for the instruction and research programs to achieve the University's mission, goals and objectives. Maintain, improve and expand all campus buildings, campus image and educational opportunities for all people. More specifically, the functions involve energy conservation, building renovation/repair, occupational safety and health, landscape design, event planning, vehicle and equipment maintenance/repair, motor pool and housekeeping services to 126 academic buildings, ten residences and seven farm buildings. Moreover, the Skilled Trades Department is responsible for repair, maintenance and preventive maintenance of campus facilities.
Work Hours 7am-4pm; rotate on-call/callbacks; essential staff required to work during adverse weather (ice, snow, storms, etc.)

Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies


Required Competency Knowledge - Technical
Duties
Applies knowledge of all phases of the carpentry trade:
* Blue print reading, shop drawing, layout work and materials lists
* Use of all the tools of the trade (power saws, drills, carpentry, hand tools, radial arm saw, grinders, table saw, sanders, jointers, etc.)

Applies knowledge of all phases of the paint trade:
* Washing and Cleaning materials and techniques
* Painting, brush, roller, or spray application techniques for all types of materials familiar to painting trade
* Drywall Surfaces - Taping, sanding, finishing
* Wall Covering - Lay out, application techniques and procedures related to decorating with wall coverings and fabrics
* Surfaces - Recognition of and proper procedures to decorate and protect all types of surfaces (wood, steel, concrete, brick, plaster, etc.)
* Sand Blasting - Type of equipment, materials, necessary air pressures to clean surfaces
* Rigging - Built-up or suspended scaffolding (ladders, stringers, stages, hooks, ropes, rolling, etc.)
* Staining - Woods (new or old), finishing or refinishing, furniture or woodwork
* Related Shop Work - Procedures necessary to work on production and special assignments requested by departments for new or refurbished equipment and materials
* Paint & Plaster - Fill nail holes and cracks; spackle or plaster all defective areas; sands smooth repaired areas flush with existing walls; apply plaster skillfully; install metal laft; apply scratch coat; brown coat and finish coat; apply finishes in accordance with existing areas. Apply primers, stains and varnishes; sprays, rolls and brushes painted and unpainted surfaces; trim windows, doors, ceilings and sidewalls; paints cove base.


Required Competency Safety and Health Compliance
Duties
Wear safety shoes and other appropriate safety gear at all times. Attend safety training sessions. Observe lock out/tag out regulations. Report on the job injuries to the supervisor at the time they occur and provide correct and accurate information to supervisor. Complete accident reports and seek immediate medical attention for on the job injuries. Operate vehicles and tools of the trade safety.


Required Competency Problem Solving
Duties
Locate and install old obsolete and hard to find parts, tools, equipment and supplies. When serving on-call, perform necessary task to make emergency callbacks safe and secure until later completion of task; calling for assistance or inform supervisor is other trade assistance required.


Required Competency Attention to Detail
Duties
Mark, cut, and shape materials to prescribed measurements. Perform minor drafting and sketches; read blue prints and modify where necessary. Check and recheck work for accuracy.
Report job injuries to supervisor, seek medical attention and complete accident report immediately.
