FTE (22 hours per week), overtime-exempt position on the Olympia campus of The Evergreen State College. This position is exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules and the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime requirements. |
Position Purpose |
This position reports to the Associate Director for Intercollegiate Athletics and is part of the Student Wellness, Recreation, and Athletics team. The position requires an understanding of and commitment to the values of The Evergreen State College and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (
NAIA). This position is responsible for building and sustaining a quality, competitive intercollegiate women's soccer program, which focuses on the development of student-athletes and supports the mission of the college. The incumbent plans and conducts all activities of the intercollegiate soccer program, including recruiting, scheduling, fundraising, alumni relations, and student-athlete mentoring (academic, physical, emotional, and social components). The position contributes to the overall success of the Athletics Program, and the larger division of Student and Academic Life through the support and development of student-athletes. |
Nature and Scope |

Essential Functions |
- Coach the intercollegiate soccer team during the season, which begins early August and runs through November and during the off-season.
- Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching, and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
- Plan and implement practices on the college's recreational facilities during pre-season, the competitive season, and in the off-season.
- Actively work on recruitment and retention of quality student-athletes on an ongoing basis, including assisting in determining the eligibility of prospective student-athletes in accordance with Cascade Collegiate Conference and NAIA rules.
- Schedule intercollegiate competition in conjunction with the Associate Director for Intercollegiate Athletics
- Schedule practice and game times prior to the season, in coordination with Assistant Director for Recreation Center Operations, and in collaboration with other coaches and staff; submit regular season schedule to Head of Officiating; notify departmental team of team schedule changes, including games, practices, and meetings, which require scheduled classroom or facility time.
- Coordinate with Certified Athletic Trainers regarding pro-active training and reactive treatment.
- Carry out the duties of the position within NAIA and Cascade Collegiate Conference rules, regulations, and guidelines.
- Accompany and supervise team on all away trips.
- Maintain regular office hours during off season, to be available to current and prospective athletes.
- Develop fundraising opportunities and implement strategies in coordination with the Assistant Director and other staff.
- Encourage academic achievement, community service, good conduct, and sportsmanship on the part of each team member.
- Attend all relevant meetings of Cascade Collegiate Conference and department meetings.
- Coordinate efforts to support the ongoing academic and future success of each student-athlete with academic and career advisors and faculty.
- Ensure the development of the whole student by contributing to and supporting the learning outcomes of student-athletes.
- Work with the Sports Information Director to provide vital information on all team members and coaches, as well as in the production of all printed and online materials related to the soccer program.
- Ensure safety of student-athletes while practicing and competing, as well as in travel situations.
- Work with leadership to coordinate and staff events that bring support to the college such as Hall of Fame, booster club, and other community events; provide outreach and information dissemination as needed.
- Responsible for planning, scheduling, and implementing the activities for an annual week-long soccer camp.
- Coach players during annual alumni soccer games and foster relationships between players and alumni.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities |
- In-depth knowledge of the sport of intercollegiate soccer, including rules, regulations, and strategies.
- Ability to comprehend and follow NAIA and Cascade Conference rules, regulations, and guidelines.
- Ability to effectively recruit and retain student-athletes capable of both helping Evergreen be successful on the field and benefiting from the academic experiences provided by the college.
- Cultural awareness and understanding of diverse experiences and ability to work effectively with students and staff who are diverse in areas such as race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, genetic information, disability, or veteran status.
- Understanding of campus support services and working knowledge of the college to make appropriate referrals.
- Knowledge of student development theory to the degree that it has a positive impact on student-athletes, Recreation & Athletics, and Student Affairs.
- Ability to understand and maintain confidentiality of student and all other information and records of a confidential nature.
- Ability to supervise and train others.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective records and reporting system within the department and the college.
- Available to work nights and weekends according to the varying needs of all components of the position.
- Willing and able to travel extensively for games and student-athlete recruitment.
- Ability to stress the importance of the total student-athlete experience on a college campus.
- Excellent interpersonal communication, leadership, and motivational skills.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree.
- Four years of experience coaching soccer at the varsity high school level or two years of experience coaching soccer at the college level.

Desired Qualifications |
- Master's degree.
- Four years of experience coaching soccer at the college level.
- Two years as a college soccer student-athlete.
- Experience developing and administering a comprehensive intercollegiate soccer program.

Conditions of Employment |
- Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
- This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
- Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
- Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information. Applicants who provide inaccurate information in their declaration will be disqualified and, if the inaccuracies are discovered after the applicant has been hired, it shall be grounds for termination.
- Must obtain CPR/AED/First Aid certification within thirty days of hire.
- Must be able to travel throughout the western United States for games, recruitment, and meetings is required.
- Must meet the eligible driver requirements: 1) Valid U.S. driver's license, 2) 18 years old or older, 3) Two or more years of fully licensed driving experience, and 4) Clean driving record with none of the following within the past 2 years: Any suspension/revocation of license for reckless driving, hit and run, leaving an accident scene, failure to appear, DUI or other vehicle-related felony; or for multiple traffic offenses (2 moving violations/infractions in 12 months/3 moving violations/infractions in 24 months) resulting in a Conditional Status driving record or subsequent suspension/revocation of license.
- Must remain in compliance with Evergreen's Travel Policy and eligible driver requirements.
- Must be available for evening and/or weekend work.
