How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

The Director, Interceptor Services is responsible for the comprehensive management and strategic direction of the Interceptor Services Business Unit within the Environmental Services Division. This role involves setting a clear vision and high standards for the unit, ensuring that organizational goals and policies are achieved while fostering a culture of excellence, safety, and collaboration. The Director will develop and implement business strategies that align with emerging industry trends and customer needs, ensuring operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and financial stability. This position also plays a pivotal role in driving innovation, managing large-scale infrastructure, and representing the division in various forums.


What you would do in this job

  • Assist in overseeing the administration, management, and operations of the Interceptor Services Business Unit while developing and implementing strategic plans and policies.
  • Ensure the successful implementation of strategic plans, monitor organizational performance, and drive operational effectiveness and innovation.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant standards and promote a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Provide financial insights, establish and monitor budgets, and identify opportunities for revenue generation and cost savings.
  • Direct and develop staff, ensuring adherence to policies and fostering a positive, equitable, and respectful work environment.
  • Develop collaborative relationships within the agency and with external stakeholders, promoting teamwork and effective communication.
  • Provide strategic direction for the management of the interceptor system, ensuring compliance with water quality standards and maintaining system integrity.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Any of the following combinations of completed education (in engineering, wastewater treatment and technology, management or related field) and experience (in wastewater collection system maintenance or related field):

  • Bachelor's degree or higher with nine years of experience, including five years of management experience.
  • Associate degree with eleven years of experience, including five years of management experience.
  • High school diploma/GED with thirteen years of experience, including five years of management experience.
License Requirement: Minnesota Pollution Control Agency S-A Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator Certificate or the ability to obtain within 24 months.

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):
  • Experience with creating and managing wastewater conveyance systems operating budgets.
  • Experience with wastewater conveyance infrastructure Maintenance.
  • Experience with wastewater conveyance infrastructure Design and Construction.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience working with diverse populations promoting an equitable, positive, and respectful work environment that values culture and diversity among all employees.
What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:

What your work environment would be:
It is anticipated that a minimum of 25% of time will be spent in the field at various work locations throughout the seven (7) county metropolitan area. Work is divided between the field, with exposure to malodorous conditions, outdoor weather and a normal office environment. Position may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and occasionally to wet, humid conditions and toxic or caustic chemicals. There is occasional exposure to extreme heat and risk of electrical shock. Position works near moving parts and equipment. Position is frequently required to travel by car locally. Position may be required to work at night and on weekends.

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
