Job Summary

The Loudoun County Department of Community Corrections is currently seeking qualified applicants for a Full-Time Probation Supervisor. Under the general direction of the Probation Manager, this position serves as a mentor/supervises staff assigned to the Probation Division, including DWI and Bilingual Probation Officers, as well as other Probation Officers as assigned. In addition to supervising staff, this position supervises a caseload; attends/testifies in Court; conducts performance reviews, addresses deficiencies in employee job performance and conflicts among staff; provides feedback and coaching; assists in recruiting, hiring, and training new staff; conducts case reviews; and completes risk/needs assessments of probationers, which result in appropriate referrals for services. As a member of the extended management team, the Probation Supervisor also provides input on organizational protocols and standard operating procedures.

The Probation Supervisor serves as an Officer of the Court, supervising individuals placed on probation from the Circuit, General District, or Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court(s); engages with staff; employs motivational interviewing with probationers assigned to their caseload to elicit goals and develop rapport; documents all interactions or significant events in case notes; prepares official Court correspondence and provides Court testimony; communicates and develops strong working relationships with community stakeholders, such as judges, Commonwealth's Attorneys, public defenders, and treatment providers; makes appropriate referrals to community agencies for services; conducts VCIN/NCIC record checks as needed; develops performance plans for staff under their supervision; provides feedback and coaching to improve work performance; reviews/approves timesheets; and other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate must have a strong knowledge of the criminal justice system, legal and courtroom procedures. Must have knowledge of probation principles and practices, particularly related to adult probationers with substance abuse or mental health diagnoses. Must have knowledge of evidence-based practices and motivational interviewing. Knowledge of specialty dockets such as Enhanced DUI Supervision, Recovery Court, Behavioral Health Docket, and Veterans Docket is a plus. Supervising a caseload of offenders, this position conducts risk/needs assessments for probationers referred to this office by the local courts (some of whom may have violent tendencies), makes referrals for services to address risk and criminogenic needs, prepares official Court correspondence, and testifies in Court as necessary. The successful candidate will possess skills in communicating ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. The ability to interpret legal documents, such as Court orders, is required. The incumbent will need to collaborate and work within a diverse probation team, as well as within the entire Loudoun criminal justice community, to include interaction with judges, Commonwealth's Attorneys, defense attorneys, and law enforcement. Excellent leadership qualities and the ability to provide coaching and feedback to improve work performance, effective conflict resolution skills, and training for new employees are imperative.

Hiring salary commensurate with experience.


Minimum Qualifications

Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, or related field and three (3) years of work-related experience in criminal justice or equivalent combination of education and experience; including a minimum of one (1) year of supervisory & leadership experience. Previous experience in probation is preferred.

The successful candidate must be able to work as part of a team within the Probation Division, extended Management Team, and with the entire Community Corrections Department. Must be willing to observe/collect urine specimens for drug and alcohol testing and to work with clients who may have a propensity for violent behavior. VCIN certification is required; selected candidate will obtain certification within 90 days of hire. Ability to speak Spanish is preferred.
