General Summary of Position
Performs advanced abstracting, coding and analysis of oncology data. Serves as resource and lead worker for the Oncology Data Analyst, reviewing the quality of oncology data. Provides inservice education, assistance and statistical reports to staff, physicians, etc.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Functions as resource and lead worker in the areas of abstracting, staging, coding and follow-up of oncologic data.
  • Reviews abstracts completed by the Oncology Data Analyst for quality/completeness and trains/advises as related to casefinding, abstracting, staging and coding.
  • Assumes responsibility for data collection and reporting to the American College of Surgeons and the Cancer Committee as related to patient care evaluations and special studies.
  • Performs follow-up for research protocol patients and monitors the effectiveness/ completeness of departmental follow-up operations. Follows-up/updates all required registry files. Corresponds, visits, and/or telephones physicians, patients and/or other institutions to obtain required information.
  • Analyzes and prepares statistical reports, as requested by physicians, committee, and/oradministrative staff. Presents reports orally/in writing, as required.
  • Reviews and processes quality and completeness reports from the District of Columbia and Maryland Cancer Registries.
  • Coordinates and compiles registry components/special studies, e.g. HIV/Malignancy Study, etc. and facilitates activities/communication with the Medical Records and other departments.
  • Identifies issues related to the maintenance/updating of the master data bases.
  • Participates in the establishment of protocols and procedures to assure smooth and efficient departmental operations and accreditation by the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer.
  • Attends oncology related conferences and educational sessions, as appropriate.


  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Associate's degree required or
    • Higher level degree required or
    • Equivalent training in health information or medical records required

    Experience

    • From 3 to 5 years experience required, such as acquired in a hospital, state, or free standing cancer registry or equivalent oncology related data collection activity. required
    • Experience in Health Information Management preferred

    Licenses and Certifications

    • TR - Tumor Registrar certification (CTR)
      required


    This position has a hiring range of $29.53 - $49.217
