The Clinical Nutrition Supervisor will assist and/or coordinate the functions, resources and programs essential for quality care and to provide a high level of nutrition related expertise in the interdisciplinary team management of all hospital patients and dietetic internship program. Position incorporates a combination of program management tasks and direct/indirect patient care.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, Licensed Dietitian with the state of WV prior tostarting position EXPERIENCE: 1. Minimum of 3 years of experience with 2 years of experience in clinical nutrition including leadership roles 2. Master's degree in nutrition or related field PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Certification in clinical specialty area EXPERIENCE: 1. 5 years or more experience in clinical nutrition 2. 2 years of leadership/management including experience with dietetic internship programs. CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. Provide assistance to the Clinical Nutrition Manager/Dietetic Internship Director in coordinating and managing the clinical staff and Dietetic Internship Program. Manage recruitment, hiring, training, evaluation and competency of personnel including clinical dietitians and diet techs; maintains a quality workforce. 2. Oversees and assists with evaluation of other clinical staff relative to their work performance in the designated work specialty area including scheduling and/or coordinating daily workflow. 3. Lead and encourage personal growth and development for self and clinical team including functioning as a resource for other staff dietitians and health care team members regarding the nutritional management of patients within his/her scope of specialty practice. 4. Assist in developing goals and objectives for not only the clinical staff but also the dietetic internship program to maintain high quality care. 5. Identify, participate and/or lead in Quality Improvement activities with the ability to actively endorse evidence-based practice. 6. Assist in implementing and evaluating dietetic internship program recruitment/retention, selection, standards, competencies, policies/procedures and budget development. 7. Evaluates the cost and effectiveness of special products and recommends changes if needed. 8. Participates in design, development, implementation and evaluation of education programs for dietetic interns. Serves as a preceptor/mentor for other dietetic interns/staff/ support personnel. Coordinates intern schedules, rotations, classes, field trips, meetings; advises and counsels interns in their development, which includes conducting intern performance appraisals, or addressing complaints or concerns. Develops/revises/updates clinical protocols, policies and procedures related to specialty area. 9. Perform human resource functions consistent with job responsibilities: recruitment, hiring, orientation and training, scheduling, supervision, competence assessment, performance evaluation, mentoring of professional development, practice advancement, and progressive discipline including termination. 10. Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements including but not limited to Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations and the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics 11. Compiles statistics and completes clinical productivity worksheets in a timely basis (monthly). Self -evaluates results and monitors for trends and changes in productivity related to workload. 12. Identifies processes or system that could potentially lead to errors and adverse events in the areas of clinical nutrition or dietetic education. 13. Perform other duties for which the employee is qualified as required or assigned by emergency or other operational reasons including assuming duties of manager in his/her absence. 14. Functions as a team member to the nutritional therapy support team including: Complete and document physician ordered consults, follow-ups, nutrition assessments on high-risk patients, diet education, NPO/Clear notes, calorie counts, nitrogen balance and metabolic cart calculations according to standards of care; including but not limited to: appropriateness of diet to diagnosis, adequacy of current tube feeding, infant formula, or parenteral nutrition orders; assessment of laboratory values, drug-nutrient interactions, medical history, current nutritional needs, nutrition education needs, care plan development and writing orders in the electronic medical record when nutrition intervention is needed for a patient. Contact the physician regarding any concerns, recommendations, etc. 15. Effectively communicate with nursing, medical and other hospital staff to ensure high quality nutritional care. Attends rounds, discharge planning and care plan conferences as needed. Attend local or national meetings/conferences specifically those that physicians request dietitian attendance or those meetings/conferences required to maintain accreditation of hospital programs or foster partnership with other facilities. 16. Functions as a Team Leader. Provide guidance and supervise daily activities of nutritional therapy support team, i.e. difficult or unusual diet orders, tube feeding calculations, formula calculations. Document potential/actual errors or harmful interactions with patients or staff committed where appropriate Work with Physicians, Nurse Managers and nursing staff on assigned units to improve medical nutrition therapy to the patient, including diet texture changes, providing appropriate foods/texture for aspiration risk (also work with speech pathologist), timing of medications to prevent drug-nutrient interactions, etc. 17. Provides high quality educational experiences for the Dietetic Interns. Review and update clinical rotation assignments annually to reflect changes in practice and feedback from previous interns. Monitor interns, making certain that they are functioning to standards before leaving unsupervised. Review and co-sign all intern documentation in the medical record. Correct assignments and evaluate progress within 2 weeks of the end of the rotation. Develop and teach classes regarding area of specialization to the interns (i.e. renal nutrition, oncology, nutrition support, etc.) Provide a caring and supportive learning environment; provide a high degree of interaction and explanation. Attend intern case study presentations, question interns, evaluate presentation. 18. Assist in supporting the highest possible patient satisfaction levels. Act on any patient food complaints, provide alternative selections and/or arrangements. Follow-up with appropriate managers on food quality issues. Conduct patient meal rounds at least 5-7 patients per week, to determine adequacy of nutritional intake and to assess acceptability of meals and service. 19. Participates in continuing education opportunities in order to update and keep abreast of changes in the Medical nutrition Therapy and related field. Maintains membership and/or involvement in professional organizations. Requires use of EPIC computer system along with being skilled in computer programs such as Word, Excel and Power Point. 2. Experience with Nutrition analysis software preferred.
