Buckeye Partners is currently seeking a Senior Director, Commercial Development with petroleum industry experience including extensive pipeline and/or terminal marketing and the ability to interpret finance/accounting statements in the Oil & Gas Industry to join our team!

Role Summary:

The Senior Director, Commercial Development role is responsible for driving business development efforts and managing strategic growth and acquisition efforts at a skilled level to maximize the contribution made by operations to overall corporate objectives. Requirements for this role includes extensive customer interaction as well as driving opportunities within the Buckeye organization.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions include:



  • Growth Capital Budget: Create an annual revenue budget by evaluating customer input and adjusting to align with market conditions. Accountable to achieve or exceed budgeted volumes and revenues at pipelines and terminals within assigned area of responsibility both directly and through managing a team of more junior colleagues.
  • Business Development: Identify and develop material new business opportunities in new geographies or commodities, including identifying and managing joint venture opportunities where appropriate, demonstrating return on investment and other economic hurdles necessary to meet corporate guidelines. Bring innovative marketing solutions to maximize value proposition across the pipeline/terminal business.
  • Customer Service: Maintain and grow relationships with senior business contacts of existing customers and identify and cultivate relationships with potential new customers. Regularly engage customers to identify mutually beneficial opportunities, while also ensuring their needs are met and their concerns are recognized, acknowledged and addressed.
  • Competitive Analysis: Identify and evaluate emerging and potential national, regional and customer-specific business trends for budgeting / forecasting and reporting to Senior Management. Actively monitor competitors to understand customers' existing alternatives and any developing logistics options.
  • Contracts: Direct the preparation of customer throughput and storage agreements and pipeline capacity commitments, demonstrating a high level of proficiency with minimal oversight. Identify potential contract risks and mitigate with legal team. Provide leadership in understanding marketplace conditions and adjusting commercial strategies to ensure execution success.
  • Pricing: Direct efforts to establish and maintain pricing structures in order to maximize overall revenues, compliant with all regulations and recognizing competitive alternatives.
  • M&A - Proactively identify potential acquisitions and participate in the assessment and negotiation as appropriate.
  • Strategy: Represent the region of assigned accountability in the development and refinement of long-term growth strategy and tactics.
  • Project Sponsor: Serve as project sponsor on large scale terminal growth projects. Drive programs of pipeline growth projects and initiatives across the Buckeye pipeline system.
  • Regulatory: Possess an extensive understanding of federal, state, and local regulations affecting the pipeline and terminal business and stay abreast of any changes that may impact our business. Proactively identify and address potential emerging competitive challenges and regulatory issues.
  • And other duties as assigned.



Position Requirements:



  • Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in business, engineering or other related discipline
  • MBA preferred
  • 10+ years of industry related, refined products experience is required, preferably with strong aptitude in the following areas: Customer Service, Finance, Business Analysis, Engineering, Operations and Logistics/Scheduling
  • Must possess extensive understanding of the petroleum logistics business and a working knowledge of pipeline and terminals operations
  • Significant experience in a commercial role (e.g. business development) is required
  • Supervisory experience is desirable

  • Demonstrated track record of leading and driving high performance teams
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications (written and oral) skills are required. Mastery of presentation skills in large group forum with various audiences (internal and external) are also required
  • Strong networking and organizational skills are critical
  • Ability and willingness to travel is required
  • Ability to act as an informal leader in the area of responsibility.
  • Exhibit traits necessary to be an informal leader within marketing team.
  • Good leadership and organizational skills are critical"

  • This role requires the ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
