The University of California, San Francisco Sandler-Moore Mass Spectrometry (MS) Core Facility invites applications for a Junior/Assistant/Associate Specialist position in the field of comparative proteomics. Rank will be determined based on combined education and years of experience in the relevant specialization.

The Junior/Assistant/Associate Specialist will be an integral member of the Mass Spec Core research team and will be expected to:



  • Field both internal and external inquiries on prospective MS projects. Provide overview of services available, provide service quotes based on core rates.
  • Collaborate closely on joint projects with the PI.
  • Prepare samples for mass Spectrometry, Run samples and analyze the data.
  • Collaborate with and support other lab members on research projects.
  • Participate in mentorship and training of undergraduate, predoctoral, and graduate students.
  • Stay up to date and familiar with relevant literature.
  • Contribute to the day-to-day running and operation of the Core.
  • Manage Preventative Maintenance on Equipment.
  • Contribute to the scientific manuscripts and grants.
  • Participate in regular group meetings, including weekly lab meetings and biweekly meetings with the PI.
  • Participate in University or Public Service.


The Sandler-Moore Mass Spectrometry Core Facility is a designated enabling technology center that serves as a mass spectrometry resource for the UCSF proteomics research community. Highly trained staff operate and maintain the instrumentation, along with associated bioinformatics hardware and software that allows the facility to offer a comprehensive suite of MS-based proteomic services.

Required Qualifications:



  • Junior Specialist - Baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience.
  • Assistant Specialist - Master's degree or a baccalaureate degree with 3 or more years of research experience.
  • Associate Specialist - Master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a variety of MS-based applications for the analysis of proteins/peptides with an emphasis on protein identification and quantification.
  • Strong analytical instrumentation skills including operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mass spectrometers and nanoflow HPLC Systems.
  • Experience in proteomics data acquisition and analysis including label-free (SWATH, spectral counting) and absolute quantification (MRM/SRM) workflows, statistics, and network/pathway analysis.
  • Skilled in protein/peptide sample preparation techniques including BCA/NanoDrop protein quantification, SDS-PAGE, and in-gel and solution proteolytic digestion protocols.
  • Self-starter and able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal, written, and communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • A collaborative spirit and willingness to work with diverse teams.
  • Experience mentoring and training junior scientists and students.
  • Statistical and data analysis skills a must.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Familiarity with Protein Pilot and Proteome Discoverer software packages in highly desirable.


The start date is flexible until the position is filled. A two-year commitment is preferred. Appointees in the Specialist series are expected to engage in specialized research and professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions and participate in University and Public Service.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $53,100-$85,000.
