Job Summary
The Academic Achievement Counselor 4 will lead efforts in: (1) leading the planning and implementation of the Mentorship component for the AvenueM program; (2) partnering with members of the AvenueM team to provide programming and curriculum for students; (3) plan and provide individualized and group services to 4 cohorts of approximately 50 community college students each; (4) provide group seminars focused on culturally rooted healing, well-being, and professional identity formation; (5) in collaboration with other team members, develop and deliver content for monthly cohort meetings and other student-centered events. Topics include emotional intelligence, professionalism, confidence, personality assessment, learning to be collaborative, ethics, effective communication, self-management, self-reflection, future planning, etc.; and (6) other duties as assigned with occasional evenings and weekends required.

- Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- Advanced experience working with diverse cultural backgrounds and sensitivity to social, educational, and cultural needs and concerns of first generation, economically challenged, and underrepresented ethnic student communities.
- Advanced expertise in developing and administering complex programs for underrepresented populations.
- Problem solving and critical thinking skills to recognize situations requiring specialized attention and handle difficult, sensitive, and/or confidential issues.
- Excellent writing skills to compose and edit correspondence, reports, and published materials.
- Knowledge of student development theory and demonstrated experience planning and administering support and retention strategies, organizational change processes and leadership development programs.
- Demonstrated competencies and advanced knowledge in theories of multicultural counseling, learning, identity development, human and career development.
- Knowledge and experience in working with historically underrepresented ethnic minority communities, first generation college students.
- Knowledge in the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching / learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring and advocacy.
- Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies.
- Extensive experience in multicultural competencies, and personal and academic crisis intervention; working with students to assist in clarification of ethics and values.
- Advanced experience in group dynamics, facilitation, and training; comprehensive assessment of academic preparation and personal competencies.
- Experience in establishing and implementing short and long term program goals and objectives; demonstrated effectiveness in mediation and conflict resolution.
- Knowledge of academic curricula; strong knowledge of the organizational climate, structure / organizations, and culture.
- Advanced experience in planning, developing, and administering enrichment programs / projects, academic and personal development seminars, courses, and workshops.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Education, Cultural Studies, Student Affairs, Higher Education, Counseling, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience cultivating and sustaining ongoing collaborative relationships with a wide array of constituents (staff, faculty, students, community members, and with campus and community organizations) to accomplish goals.
- Knowledge of organizational development concepts and practices, performance management models and practices, and career development practices.

Department Overview The mission of the Office of Medical Education (OME) is to provide excellent support for School of Medicine learning programs through the delivery of centralized expertise, services and instructional resources for faculty and medical students. OME is an interdisciplinary team which provides a variety of services directly to students and faculty, including: instructional materials, financial aid, counseling, tutoring and support for special programs. OME staff offers support for various School of Medicine and Health System committees, including the Promotions Board, the Committee on Educational Policy, and the Educational Advisory Board. Finally, OME sponsors a number of special programs in support of the academic mission and is able to assist with the presentation of those sponsored by other administrative and academic groups. The School of Medicine received a $1.8 million award from California Medicine Scholars Program to build a pathway from Community College to Undergraduate to Medical School. Under general supervision of the Manager of Workforce Programs and Innovation, this position will assist with the development and continued growth of the mentorship aspect of the AvenueM Program, focused on community college to medical school for the School of Medicine.
