Position Summary

The Sadelain Lab is looking for a motivated senior laboratory technician to join their team. This position will focus on CAR T cell studies in murine models.

The Sadelain Lab investigates cell engineering for the treatment of cancers and other illnesses, including cancer, neurological diseases, and autoimmune and transplant-related conditions. The lab will be a foundational research group for the Columbia Initiative in Cell Engineering and Therapy (CICET), directed by Dr. Sadelain.

Reporting to the Sadelain Lab Manager, the Senior Technician will be responsible for the maintenance and management of the Sadelain mouse colonies, administer T cells, tumor cells and hematopoietic cells to mice, and perform various assays and analyses on cells retrieved from mice.

Responsibilities



  • Set-up, maintain and manage a large mouse colony for the Sadelain lab
  • Infuse T cells and hematopoietic cells, establish tumors (cell lines and PDX) by IV or IP administration
  • Perform regular measurement of cell engraftment, persistence and tumor burden by bioluminescence imaging
  • Maintain a breeding colony for mice bearing specific mutations
  • Perform daily lab activities and assist lab members with cell infusions or cell retrieval
  • Extract genomic DNA or prepare retrieved tissues for multi-color FACS analysis
  • Assists in lab research by performing surgical procedures to establish orthotopic tumors
  • Assists in research by doing histology through cryostat sectioning
  • Direct lab contact for ICM (Institute of Comparative Medicine) for any sick mice for the lab
  • Orders mice and serve as the lab liaison for the completing of MTA (Materials Transfer Agreements) when needed
  • Manages and updates protocols used in various disease models
  • Oversee expenses related to animal purchase, husbandry and housing costs
  • Order lab supplies
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned


Minimum Qualifications



  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree and at least 1.5 years of related experience or equivalent in education, training and experience.

  • Role specific competencies and skill requirements



    • Willingness to work with mice
    • Technical accuracy, reliability, and attention to the details of procedural protocols, organizational skills, adherence to safety guidelines and the ability to work in a team
    • Excellent organizational and communication skills and a strong interest in biological sciences
    • Participation in the medical surveillance program:

      • Laboratory animals
      • Potential bloodborne pathogen exposure


    • Must successfully complete applicable systems training requirements




Preferred Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences
  • Research experience in a biology lab - wet lab experience
  • Well-versed in molecular biology and basic laboratory techniques
  • Experience in mouse handling including cell infusion procedures and colony maintenance highly preferred
  • Experience in basic histological procedures (i.e. immunohistochemistry) is preferred but not essential
  • Proficient at performing complicated experiments in a timely manner
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain detailed electronic laboratory records
  • Ability to set up and conduct experiments or activities according to established protocols
