Columbia University in the City of New York: Earth Institute: Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) Location 04 Open Date Dec 06, 2024 Salary Range or Pay Grade $71,050-$71,050 for Postdoctoral; $80,000-$90,000 for Associate Research Scientist Description The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University located in Palisades, New York, invites applications for a Postdoctoral or Associate Research Scientist position in seismology. The position is associated with the project entitled Modeling Earth from Atomic to Global Scale (MINERALS) funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary team of senior and junior scientists to interpret seismic tomographic models of the elastic structure of the heterogeneous deep mantle in terms of temperature, mineralogy, and composition and to use these models to help constrain dynamic comparison of different tomographic models, assessment of model uncertainties and resolution, and evaluation of model fidelity using forward wave-propagation modeling and comparison with reference datasets. A primary goal of the project in the quantitative conversion of seismically constrained elastic models of three-dimensional structures into models of mineral composition and state. Research activities also involve regular communication and collaboration with geodynamicists and mineral physicists pursuing focused research on related aspects of the overall project. Qualifications Prior experience with the seismic tomography and the modeling of diverse seismological observations is expected. The ability to think and work across disciplinary boundaries is a plus. Candidates for the rank of Postdoctoral Research Scientist should have recently completed or be nearing completion of a PhD in geophysics. Salary is $71,050. Candidates for the rank of Associate Research Scientist must have a PhD in geophysics and a minimum of 2 years of relevant post-PhD experience. Salary range: $80,000-$90,000. The positon is initally funded for one year, possibly extending to three and a half years. The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will continue until the position is filled. Columbia University benefits accompany this Officer of Research appointment. The Lamont campus values diversity and inclusion, and encourages applications from members of underrepresented minority groups. Application Instructions We accept online applications only. |
