The Position

East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is accepting applications for Laboratory Technician III (Lab Tech III). Lab Tech IIIs perform physical, chemical and biological analyses of water, wastewater, industrial waste, and other environmental samples.

Typical duties include:

*Performing chemical and biological analysis of water, wastewater, and other environmental samples following specific procedures.

*Operating, calibrating, and performing routine maintenance and maintaining documentation for complex laboratory equipment and instruments.

*Conducting acute and chronic bioassays using fish and mussels.

*Diagnosing technical or data quality issues for assigned analytical procedures; working with senior staff to identify root cause and corrective actions.

*Collecting, receiving, extracting, and digesting a variety of samples; preparing field and sample control documentation and submitting/receiving samples for analysis.

*Entering analytical results into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

*Ordering, receiving, and maintaining an adequate supply of chemicals, supplies, and replacement laboratory equipment.

*Assisting chemists or microbiologists in developing new analytical methods, performing research and experiments to solve problems; may perform specialized research assignments on well-defined projects.

*Training other staff members in analytical methods and laboratory procedures; may assist in overseeing and reviewing the work of lower-level staff in specific project areas.

*Using proper QA/QC techniques and maintaining QA/QC records and documentation.

*May perform data peer review.

*Other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will clearly demonstrate:

*A bachelor's degree with major coursework in chemistry, biology, or a closely related field and/or extensive experience working in a water or wastewater laboratory.

*Strong motivation to optimize and automate procedures within the laboratory.

*Skills focused on professional development and continuous improvement.

*Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

*Ability to maintain a positive work environment and professional collaborative relationships.

*Knowledge of EPA-promulgated, and other analytical methods, for chemical and biological analyses.

*Familiarity with laboratory equipment, procedures, and problem-solving methods used in an environmental laboratory.

*Knowledge of the principles of statistics and data analysis.

*Knowledge of federal and state drinking water and wastewater regulations.

*Knowledge of laboratory QA/QC.

*Ability to critically evaluate and update laboratory Standard Operating Procedures per current practice, regulations, method requirements and internal QA/QC.

*Familiarity with common software used in a laboratory to evaluate data, communicate within EBMUD, and manage electronic documents.

The salary range is $9,208 per month increasing to $9,668, $10,151, $10,659 and $11,192 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.

THE LABORATORY

EBMUD Laboratory is a full-service, production-oriented, environmental laboratory using cutting-edge technology to characterize the chemical, physical, biological, and microbial properties of a wide range of environmental samples in support of 1.4 million drinking water customers and 740,000 wastewater customers. Laboratory data is used for regulatory compliance, process monitoring and control, operational and capital improvement projects, and special studies for drinking water, wastewater, recycled water, biosolids, resource recovery programs, etc. The Laboratory operates 365 days a year and is certified by California Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP) under the stringent lab certification regulatory requirements (TNI standard) for environmental laboratories. The weekend shifts are made available each year to trained staff on a voluntary basis. When insufficient volunteers are available newly hired technicians may be required to work one weekend day per two-week pay period with an associated weekday off and/or assigned around-the-clock Wet Weather Standby shifts

Requirements

1.Completion of the twelfth grade, or its equivalent.

2.Two years of employment in chemical, biological, or bacteriological laboratory work, at a level comparable to or higher than EBMUD's class of Laboratory Technician II.

3.One year performing analysis of water, wastewater, or industrial wastes.

Additional Requirements:

*Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.

*Must possess physical capacity to perform the critical and important duties of the job, including sufficient strength to lift 50 pounds.

*Must work onsite at EBMUD.

*Must be willing to work overtime as needed.

*May be required to work a regular alternate schedule.

*May be required to work on an EBMUD holiday (based on seniority). The holiday schedule is developed on an annual basis.

The most competitive candidates will have a bachelor's degree with major coursework in chemistry, biology, or a closely related field.

The Selection Process

1.Submit a completed EBMUD application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.ebmud.com by 4:30 p.m., Friday, February 7, 2025. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.

2.Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.

3.All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates receiving a passing score to be invited to an in-person panel interview.

4.Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.

5.The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.

6.All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
