The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) is the statewide professional association for physicians and medical students, supporting 25,000 members. We are dedicated to educating and advocating for the physicians of Massachusetts and patients locally and nationally. A leadership voice in health care, the MMS contributes physician and patient perspectives to influence health-related legislation at the state and federal levels, works in support of public health, provides expert advice on physician practice management, and addresses issues of physician well-being. Under the auspices of NEJM Group, the MMS extends our mission globally by advancing medical knowledge from research to patient care through the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), NEJM Evidence, NEJM AI, NEJM Catalyst, NEJM Journal Watch, and through our accredited and comprehensive continuing medical education programs.

We are currently seeking a Medical Illustrator to support our NEJM editorial team based in Boston. This position offers flexibility with a hybrid schedule (in-office and remote) or a fully remote option.

The Medical Illustrator collaborates with the Graphic Arts Director, the Medical Illustration & Multimedia Manager, other medical illustrators and staff to advance the quality and effectiveness of all visual content in the NEJM. Applies knowledge of art and design, proficiencies in illustration and animation software, and understanding of medicine to visually communicate new clinical and scientific information to physicians and scientists. Directly works with editors and authors to develop medical/scientific print and online interactive and multimedia illustrations for The New England Journal of Medicine. Reads author-submitted manuscripts, interpreting medical and scientific information and making recommendations for appropriate ways to represent information. Expected to research original concepts and reinterpret submitted images to best communicate information visually. Follows style guidelines for NEJM graphics, suggesting changes and exceptions to guidelines when appropriate. Works with Graphic Arts Director, Medical Illustration & Multimedia Manager and other medical illustrators to refine and improve graphics style. Tracks and oversees production for assigned illustrations and animations. Communicates design, production, and scheduling concerns to supervisor and relevant staff. Helps maintain the in-house illustration archive. Ensures accuracy and consistency of assignments. Advocates for technical and procedural innovation when appropriate.

Responsibilities:



  1. Research complex scientific concepts to create clear, accurate, informative, and engaging medical and scientific illustrations, information graphics, animations, videos, interactive online content, and miscellaneous graphics.
  2. Works directly with editors and authors and other in-house staff during the development phase of projects. This includes sending drafts and queries, and creating multiple iterations of projects based on feedback.
  3. Reviews and edits scripts for the creation of storyboards and animations.
  4. Works with the Medical Illustration & Multimedia Manager and Video Producer to create storyboards, animatics, animations.
  5. Collaborates and works closely with other editorial departments during the production phase of projects. This includes being available for edits, discussing author changes, and communicating status for sending to press or for staging on NEJM.org.
  6. Ensures that all assigned work is produced on schedule, accurately, and to established sizes, formats, quality standards, and NEJM style.
  7. In coordination with the Graphic Arts Director, Medical Illustration & Multimedia Manager, and other staff medical illustrators, serves as an in-house resource on medical illustration, graphic design, and visual communication.
  8. Helps to catalog and maintain an up-to-date library of NEJM medical illustration assets.
  9. Keeps current with technological developments and innovations by attending conferences and other training.
  10. Performs other duties as required.


Qualifications:

* Master's degree in medical illustration or biovisualization, or equivalent experience is required.

* A minimum of 2 years of medical illustration, animation, or equivalent production experience.

* Must have strong knowledge in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects and familiarity with InDesign.

* Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working in a Mac OSX environment.

* Excellent drawing skills.

* Working knowledge of medical sciences including anatomy, genetics, biochemistry, immunology, histology, biology, and chemistry.

* Ability to independently research a wide range of complex medical and scientific concepts.

* Experience in 2D animation is highly desirable.

* Proficiency with audio editing, video editing, video post-production or videography is preferred.

* Familiarity with fundamentals of biomedical statistics, information analysis, and presentation is desirable. Experience or interest in information graphics, UX/UI design, graphic design, and data visualization and working knowledge with CSS, HTML 5, JavaScript or other tools for online interactivity is desirable.

* Familiarity with 3D modeling is a plus.

* Attention to detail, commitment to quality, and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-oriented environment.

* Excellent creative, communication, organizational and teamwork skills.
