DESCRIPTION

The Baseball and Softball Field Specialist has a concentrated focus on baseball and softball playing surfaces. Under supervision, the Baseball and Softball Field Specialist will perform skilled and semi-skilled athletic field turf maintenance duties. Operate various turf equipment to perform duties related to turf maintenance. Operate "ride-on" and "walk-behind" mowers and tractors with aerating and de-thatching attachments or fertilizer spreader.

Follow established specifications to project a rich, well-manicured turf. Maintain and repair turf irrigation systems and related equipment. Perform preventive and routine maintenance on related equipment. Assist with other grounds and landscape maintenance tasks as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • At least one-year recent relevant work experience, or a combination of education and experience, performing routine turf maintenance, and grounds or garden maintenance work. Knowledge of related methods, tools, materials and equipment used.

  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate "ride on" mowers, tractors, turf sweepers, dump trucks and associated attachments and equipment for turf mowing, aerating and de-thatching. Demonstrated ability to safely operate trenchers, aerators, rototillers and other commonly-used power-driven landscape maintenance equipment.

  • Demonstrated ability to safely and effectively utilize related hand and power tools.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform routine and preventive maintenance and minor repairs, including: oil, belt and filter changes, lubrication, replenishing fluid levels when necessary, tires and general cleaning.

  • Basic understanding of mechanical concepts in the area of hydraulics, electrical belts and pulleys, P.T.O.'s, gasoline and diesel engines, and air- and water-cooled engines.

  • Ability to understand and adhere to accepted trade turf maintenance standards.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of commonly used Southern California plant material, their cultural requirements, pests and diseases. Ability to identify undesirable plant material. Experience applying basic Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods.

  • Demonstrated experience maintaining & repairing irrigation systems utilizing recognized standards, guidelines, applications and practices.

  • Demonstrated ability to function efficiently and productively as a team member, with all the interpersonal skills required to build and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals and work groups. Ability to communicate clearly and accurately, and interact effectively with a diverse University community of students, staff, faculty and general public, in a service-oriented environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas and information orally, electronically and in writing, in a manner which is clear and concise. Ability to understand and carry-out verbal and written instructions.

  • Ability to work effectively in an environment subject to frequently changing priorities and work assignments. Skill to prioritize work assignments and coordinate work schedule with others to meet established deadlines and department needs.

  • Ability to identify and suggest new ways to improve efficiency or productivity. Demonstrated problem-solving skills and sound judgment.

  • Ability to understand and apply University and Departmental policies and procedures.

  • Willingness and ability to perform all job duties utilizing knowledge and understanding of related University, State and Federal safety codes and practices.

  • Demonstrated experience maintaining pitchers mounds and slopes as well as batting surfaces

  • Demonstrated ability to accurately maintain proper grass edges on baseball and softball fields

  • Demonstrated ability to perform precise field line painting for baseball and softball

  • Demonstrated ability to manage moisture levels of baseball and softball fields

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Background and Reference check required prior to hire.

  • Must have a valid CA driver license (or be willing to get within 10 days of hire).

  • Must maintain good driving record and participate in DMV pull notice program throughout the duration of employment.

  • Work schedule is Wed-Sun 11am-7:30pm from January-June (during season) and Mon-Fri 11am-7:30pm July-December (off-season), but additional flexibility is required to work alternate schedule and/or overtime during peak periods and special events.

  • Schedules are subject to review based on departmental and athletic needs.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $42,616 - $56,251 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $20.41 - $26.94

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
