JJob Summary

Variable - Usually M-F, but will cover all shifts 7 days a week

Manages the day to day technical support operations of the inpatient Pharmacy systems. Provides general and direct supervision of the technicians. Manages the distribution of pharmaceuticals to all units in the hospital, clinics and other ancillary departments.

Essential Functions

  • Supervises employees, performs appraisals, identifies and implements learning needs, recruits and hires new technical support staff.
  • Manages the distribution of pharmaceutical products: organizes distribution functions, resolves distribution issues, develops workflow patterns and staffing assignments, and identifies areas needing process improvement.
  • Ensures proper controlled substance documentation occurs for all transactions: performs routine audits of Secure Vault, automated dispensing machines and MAR documentation; completes DEA 222 order forms; completes controlled substances invoices.
  • Initiates and supports quality improvement efforts: Oversees the performance and completion of appropriate quality assurance systems.
  • Ensures the production of sterile parenteral products, non-sterile extemporaneous compounding and repackaging in accordance with accepted standards of pharmacy practice.

Physical Requirements

Works primarily in the pharmacy. Delivers medications to nursing units. Requires considerable walking, standing, pushing mobile cart of 50 pounds maximum and lifting 25 pounds of material. May be required to frequently stretch, bend, twist, squat, or kneel to perform job. Works with potentially hazardous agents. Otherwise, hazards are very minor such as minor cuts, bruises, and non-contaminated needle pricks. Exposed to various conditions throughout the workday such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs and changes in temperature and humidity. Must be able to perform manipulative skills such as writing, typing, and data entry into the computer and automated dispensing machines. Must have use of both hands, be able to see clearly and read small type such as that on unit-dose medication packages and syringes. Must be able to speak and be understood by others. Must be able to hear normal sounds with moderate background noises.

Education, Experience and Certifications

H.S. Diploma or equivalent required. Certified Pharmacy Technician. 5 years of hospital pharmacy experience preferred, leadership experience, Tech 3 or leader equivalent.
