Job Description Summary

Under general supervision, the Immigration Advisor will support immigration, programming, and student services for international students at Wake Forest University. The Immigration Advisor provides advice on immigration, social, cultural, and personal matters, processes and evaluates applications related to visa status benefits; and facilitates in the planning and execution of international student success programs.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and supports immigration advising for international students.
  • Serve as Alternate Responsible Officer and manages the J-1 degree seeking student program.
  • Process and prepare immigration documents for F-1 and J-1 students related to visa issuance, international travel, employment, change of education, leave of absences, part-time enrollment and other relevant documentation
  • Advise international students on matters, including, yet not limited to, immigration (e.g. recommendations and approval of immigration benefits related to F-1 and J-1 students on campus employment, practical training employment, extensions of stay, travel and reentry procedures), personal, financial, and student engagement activities.
  • Coordinate Connect at Wake, Orientation and all other professional and cultural programs for international students.
  • Participate with other ISS staff to participate in analysis and development of policies, procedures, and programs related to F-1 and J-1 students.
  • Performs operations in various information systems (Terra Dotta, Workday, etc.)

Other Functions:

  • Participate in professional conferences and relevant professional development (ex. NAFSA, NCAIE, Terra Dotta) to keep abreast of developments in the field.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education & experience
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (required to be authorized on government systems).
  • Ability to prioritize duties in a multi-tasking, fast-paced professional environment.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively to organize information and maintain attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in person, via email, and by phone.
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop & maintain effective working relationships with constituents reflecting a broad range of identities, perspectives, and experiences.
  • Ability to maintain knowledge of changing regulations, requirements, and procedures across the department and related entities.
  • Proficiency using computer applications (i.e. Microsoft Office, Google Applications, internet, Zoom, Workday).
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with batching software (Like TerraDotta) or utilizing SEVIS for processing of immigration processing.
  • Experience working with students and individuals from different cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience studying, living, or working abroad.
  • Knowledge of: Workday, WordPress, Terra Dotta.

Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for own work only.
  • Eligible to work from home 1-2 days per week.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sedentary work primarily involves sitting/standing; communicating with others to exchange information; repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers; and assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
