Primary Purpose:

Provides analytical support under direction of team lead/manager to all areas of SDG&E and its business units with regard to electric demand and energy forecasting, load research and analysis, program measurement and evaluation, customer end-use analysis, technology adoption, customer electric behavior, load profiles, studies supporting rate design and other operational and regulatory reporting and/or regulatory related analysis. This role will be part of a team responsible for using statistical programs, developing internal analytical solutions, and using other tools to conduct intensive analysis of project data, complemented by objective research to support analytical/project needs. Utilizes problem solving and critical thinking skills in providing analytical support for internal analyses. Interacts with other team members, internal and external stakeholders in a manner that is professional and promotes collaboration. This position works under the supervision of manager or senior team members and will often work in small groups depending on the project scope.

Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Conducts statistical studies of energy utilization and supports development of load information and forecasts related to system loads, energy sales, customer usage and demand response programs for internal analyses and various state and federal regulatory proceedings. Utilizes and maintains complex forecasting models and supporting methodologies, as necessary to provide internal and external deliverables. Supports the development of load forecasts, hourly rate class back casts, program level load impacts and other relevant demand and usage factors by rate or customer class, business type, and individuals within the broad scope of regulatory, rate design, demand response, energy efficiency and advanced metering objectives. Utilizes and maintains complex load research and forecasting models, analyses, methodologies, and databases, updating as necessary to reflect the regulatory and industry changes. Provides analytical support to the other areas of SDG&E and its business units regarding the development of fact-based integrated analyses and the measurement and evaluation of pricing or dynamic rates, demand response programs and pilots and/or business proposals including new demand response programs and optional rates and/or pilot rates.
  • Manipulates, analyzes, and interprets a wide range of technical and specialized data using economic or statistical methods and tools. Supports with extracting, processing, segmenting and analyzing large amounts of data, e.g.15-minute and hourly interval load data. Performs quality control checks to ensure accuracy of data. Assists with maintaining data pipelines by collecting, cleaning, and standardizing, and analyze data from various internal and external sources. To the extent possible improve and recommend data collection, cleaning, and quality control specifications and data sampling techniques. Works in SDG&E's billing and SAP data systems, gain understanding data base structures, including customer interval data bases, system load data bases, hourly and daily weather data bases and customer characteristics.
  • Provides energy related information or analysis to support regulatory compliance and reporting based on daily, monthly, seasonal, annual and multiyear requests. Supports internal processes to include specific data element maintenance, provides billing and interval data to authorized 3rd parties or as formal data requests via SDG&E's internal applications or regulatory case management. Presents findings and recommendations to internal stakeholders including SDG&E management through reports, presentations, or other direct communications.
  • Supports the development of management recommendations concerning SDG&E's regulatory policies and strategies to maximize customer value. Provides analytical support of regulatory proposals and develops models as needed that support current company goals. Under guidance, provides analytical support to various areas (business units such as: general rate cases, rate design applications, long term electric demand forecasts, electric procurement, demand response, energy Efficiency, System Planning, Clean Transportation, building electrification, regulatory and legal) in the development of testimony exhibits, workpapers and data request responses that support SDG&E's strategic goals and objectives.
  • Interfaces with the internal and external personnel as needed to develop proper analyses for forecasting, load research and load analysis, including rate-related concepts and issues. Stays current with relevant regulatory initiatives and changes that impact the energy landscape. Monitors market, regulatory and legislative environments. Supports senior staff by attending external working groups at the CPUC, Energy Division, or demand forecasting at the CEC. May include participating in the form of discussing strategies, relevant data requirements to support new deliverables, and a good understanding of the issues facing SDG&E's forecasting, load research and measurement and evaluation objectives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).


Hybrid Schedule:



  • Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow the employee to work onsite three days per week and remotely on the remaining workdays.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.



Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's Degree Economics, business, engineering, accounting, applied mathematics, statistics, data science or a related field of study, or equivalent work-related experience.
  • 1+ years using complex mathematical modeling, forecasting, and advanced statistical techniques through academic studies or work-related projects.
  • Ability to work individually and with others as part of a team environment.
  • Experienced with MS Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Economics, business, engineering, accounting, applied mathematics, statistics, data science or a related field of study.
  • Experience with forecasting methodologies, and regression analysis, and advanced statistical techniques.
  • Experience programing with relevant software: SQL, SAS, R, Stata or Python.
  • Energy industry related experience highly desirable
  • Ability to work individually and with others as part of a team environment.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of key regulatory, legislative and competitive issues facing SDG&E and its business units.
  • Knowledge of macro and micro economic theory and econometric models.
  • Analytical and conceptual skills.
  • Ability to creatively solve new problems.
